That's a face to face deal all day long, in my opinion. 

If it's  something rare as rocking horse sh@t, then that's  worth the trip.

If not, pass this one up and wait for something local.

The person who is selling the gun could bank the money with out sending the gun 

, pay pal would turn around and say , sorry we don't cover firearms

We're saying the same kinda thing  But if he does send it and its all perfect in and good order... PP will have never have to know. Its when, like you rightly say, theres an issue, but its up to the buyer to make that choice I suppose.
