ChrisJones 7,973
1st of May sees Scotland's minimum unit pricing of 50p levied on all alcoholic beverages. Starting in a couple of hours the price changes will kick in and the cost of booze will go up substantially. Minimum unit pricing means that there is a 50p tax charge on every unit of alcohol in a beverage so a bottle of strong cider that currently costs around 4 quid will shoot up to over 11 and government ministers are saying that 50p is just the start claiming that when the MUP was debated in 2011 it didn't account for inflation. They'd like to see a 70p tax charge levied instead but have agreed to raises and research every two years. Government ministers have said that the aggressive approach will save lives as they literally tax the piss out of the average Scot, whereas the drinks industry rolled its eyes and pointed to every case in history where this kind of government intervention simply allowed the black market to spring up and profit from its new niche. Sensible health regulation or a nanny state?

Blackbriar 8,568
The nanny state at its worst ! I'm surprised that the EU allowed this - unified taxation, anti-competitive, whatever. Hark at me, looking to the EU for helping hand !! I'll be in the loft tomorrow morning - shedloads of my brewing gear stashed away. If they bring this in here, I can spot a nice little earner !

WILF 44,285
If they want to change the culture (and boozing in Scotland is a cultural thing just like Ireland) then they should follow England’s example and import 98 million Muslims ! Things like this are a joke really.......if governments think there is a massive drink problem then they should be asking “why” and you can bet the top answer won’t be the price ! Trouble is, they probably don’t want to admit any real social problems. Bit like the UK with all these fecking payday loan firms, they say there’s a debt problem and they need to crack down......why is there a debt problem?......cause people can’t afford to live ya fecking clowns, too busy paying you c**ts! The “look at us DOING something” response! 4 4
scothunter 12,609
Most of the SNP followers are all the alkie c**ts and drug addicts also a fair few on disability. Deluded in thinking if the SNP get independence there benefits are going to double overnight and there will be no more hardship food banks etc. When back in reality they will get hit even harder. SNP have been in power for over a decade they have more power than any other devolved nation and never use it other than to legislate ridiculous policy that benefits no one. It's only introduced to do the opposite direction of the rest of the UK. They have had to shelf and u turn numerous policies when they were found out to be I'll thought out and questionably illegal. The sad thing is even some nationalist supporters know they are useless but don't care independence at any cost even if it's the ruin of the nation. I like them to the Japs in ww2 fantatics prepared to go down burning for a cause. They are the most obnoxious undemocratic hatefull party in our modern UK politics. They wanted a one force police "police Scotland" seriously lads since that was created our force is a complete shambles. Think we're on our third top cop as the rest have been sacked or facing criminal prosecution. Now this alcohol law another useless unworkable piece of nonsense. If there any positives from all this is the canny Scots here who voted NO will not be changing there minds as the SNP keep rolling out these crackpot schemes and not prepared to even consider helping the UK and its people get a Brexit that benefits us. They will act like they always do divisive and spiteful. 5
Born Hunter 17,637
Take away alcohol and suddenly everyone is on the Liberty train! That's British as f**k that. "You can have our rights, our money, our guns and our lives. But we draw the line at our alcohol!". 1 1

Gav 1,708
Just been talking to my mate who owns a shop at the end of the road, and he wont be affected, its the supermarkets that will feel the brunt of it. His price marked spirits £14.49 etc fall within the limits, 26 units = £13, the only thing going up really is cheap high alcohol, as said before £4 will become £11, drinkers will still drink no matter what, like us smokers, they tax tobacco to high hell, but we still smoke. The tax then pays for our chemo, before ya start moaning. So I'm cracking open the gin early as its my birthday soon, chin chin old beans 1
