A gentsknife with turkish walnut burl.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

actually I'm working on this tiny gentsknife, nearly finished, just missing the final polish on the wood.

I took this time exhibition grade turkish walnut burl, as it's used normally by stockers and so it was asking for an original london oil finish   a la Purdey.

The blade from 1.2442 with forging texture, 85mm long

Guard from iron, this time not soldered but press fitted and glued, I didn't want to mess up the forging texture with the solder, press fit looks cleaner.

The iron ferrule has a copper layer, not as usual with black fiber, but with a about 1mm deep, fine groove for deep contrast and haptic.

As soon as I finish the wood I'll post new pics...

jist out curiosity what handles take the most work??

Buffalo is far less expensive than walnut burl or Sambar and buffalo won't need the oil finish (about 20 layers of oil, hardener etc.)

A fully shaped buffalo handle takes some time, but the material is not that expansive.

Sambar is expensive but not difficult to make a handle, as you only shape the upper part, oiling, polishing, but needs a nice pommel to look good.

Walnut is similar to work with as buffalo, but expensive and loads of polishing after the handle is done.

With wood and even buffalo you have to be very carefully working on the knife, as it easily dents in the vice.

Sambar will last forever, buffalo can get dull of not oiled, walnut burl needs some oil now and then, too.

Nicolas

Thank you Sirs!

This turkish walnut is really nice, not the easiest way to polish it, but I think it's worth the effort.

Soon I'll make a similar one, but with Wharncliffe blade
