retrieving dummies like a Labrador but not lamped rabbits

Recommended Posts

Just come back from a mooch with my trusty hounds, one of which I could happily have drowned in the lake ... at the time. Whilst most of the time Schuck is obedient, retrieves rabbits beautifully, even when there are other dogs around, when it comes to red furry things her feral nature takes over. Inside a very dense bramble the size of a house, I had to wait until the cow had finished venting her spleen before she'd come away. You might say that's no great problem, but it could be when it's getting dark and there's millions of dog walkers wending their way on innocent strolls after work. At least she had the decency to catch the thing in deep cover, and I suppose it could have been worse: she could have retrieved it to me on the path in full sight of all the passers by.  A few more grey hairs to add to my rapidly increasing collection!

Facts are,..(and I do hope my opinion is of some small comfort to lads, who try so hard to get their dogs fetching captured game back to them),..that..not all lurcher type dogs will retrieve. It i

Good luck rob be interesting to know what to try and how you get on so keep us posted. Mine is nearly 4 and not a chance with a possessive streak a mile wide and some sort of over excited frenzy with

Interesting to read about Bruce. Fact is, I've known one or two lurchers like that, and even one that buried its catch, though I did, at the time, put it down to a lot of Saluki in the breeding. Saluk

Yes, quite agree. In the case of my current lurchers the thing they lack is speed, but more than make up for it in determination, never-ceasing to hunt (OK, that's both good and bad depending on where and what you are doing), and a canny ability to slide through the deepest cover like eels.

Don’t give up on this pup bud , he’s only learning his trade, if you start believing the pup won’t,  he defiantly  won’t

People just passing opinions then calling them facts ?

one dog can react differently to a situation than another, that’s nothing got to do with chemistry , it’s temperament, everydog will have elements we like and dislike , focus on the positive,

in reality when we invest our time into a dog we end up lookin for traits we like in ourselves

build trust, the relationship is the key, don’t confront or discipline in your space , hand feed , you don’t need to take the pup everywhere, just give it quality time when you do get the chance, don’t over stimulate in the house,

If your pup is retrieving already there is something there to work on, the last pup worked here buried a heap of bunnies before he came right

Relax and enjoy the pup on your tod , and believe

They won’t all retrieve that’s is a fact  , no doubt ,

why they won’t is very much open to speculation and worth investing in

Every dog is an open book but not everyone can read between the lines, ✌️

      **sorry for the double post**
I know I'm probably going to get the piss severely ripped out of me for asking this, but
Has anyone ever successfully trained a deaf lurcher (from two working parents and I own her 4 year old sister who is an awesome little bunny basher.)
Genetically she has potential, but...what do you experts think?
She's not a Double merle by the way, it's extreme piebald/white head. Her vision is perfect

Hi to all, so I've never owned a whippet before and have encountered an irritating habit that got worse in the last month of ferreting and was wondering if anyone out there has had success minimising noise during ferreting?
So he runs prey silently, almost never barks at home so I was very happy going into his first winter, but.... when the ferret slot machine is not paying out fast enough for his liking he yips at the holes he senses are near the underground action. On top of that, if he runs a bolted rabbit to ground again he persistently barks at the hole while constantly looking at me as if to say "get them ferrets over here mate, I've got one for you"
I've a very experienced collie lurcher who is a dream to ferret with but the whippet seems to make no reference to the good stuff he does. Any ideas on managing this?

      Evening all,
I'm lucky enough to have first pick from a friends litter. He’s crossed his Saluki dog with his Collie Bull GH bitch. I’ve only seen videos of the litter as he’s based in UK. Few different characters in the litter, some sit reluctant off in the back ground others play among themselves two are incredibly forward one more than the other.

What key things do you look for when picking a litter? I’ve mostly ran mine on rabbits, reds and some others.

      Go stead,
      oshea
