How are you hardening your steel ant?

ive been heating it up to critical temp, so it's non magnetic and then quenching in oil, and then once fully cool and polished back up I've been tempering it to a straw colour with the blow torch.

It may not be the best way to do it but it seems to work well on the steel I'm using.

Trial and error, I've got a set of leaf springs if you run out of things to hammer ?

Worked for centuries so no reason it won't work now. I have done a lot that way and works well for a quick blade.

My Mrs got a new oven and it has a higher top temp than the last one so after hardening with the quench it comes into the kitchen and i temper in it with a soak for 45min at 220 ish for straw/bronze. (yes she is very long suffering ;) )

temper as soon as possible after hardening just remove scale and in the oven preferebly within 10 mins of hardening it will reduce the amount of retained austenite in steel ..sooner the better ;)
