When I was a boy, we lived in Australia.

One day, there was a big birthday party, and all us pommie kids were invited, so off we went, larking about down the garden. After a while, one of the parents came down, to see what all the hullabaloo and squealing was about......

And there was me and all the other kids obliviously poking sticks at a funnel web spider !

Just watched my pet spider Boris catch a fly while I was doing a spray treatment for flys at a waste transfer yard, he lives on the passenger side dashboard of my van !

We used to see these grotesque freaks in the desert quite often, they are called camel spiders but aren't actually a spider since they have 10 legs. They have huge jaws and are one of the fastest inse

I still drop bugs in spider webs if I want to see what kind of spider comes out muller it.

Not to do with spiders, but still in Australia, I had a school pal (Welsh kid), who went running home with a cardboard box, shouting "Mummy, look what I've caught ! Can I keep it ?"

His mum opened the box, to be greeted by a very pi55ed off Tiger snake !

To this day, it's still beyond me how he got it in the box without being killed....

So, phobias of snakes of spiders aren't necessarily irrational.......it just depends where you live !

Spiders are fascinating  get a tuning fork, give it a tap, place it gently on a web and watch them run out to investigate whats for supper  when I was a kid I always used to catch wasps, pull their wings off (with difficulty) and drop them into decent webs :icon_redface:

They are fascinating but there is just something about them that freaks me out. Strangely enough scorpions don't trigger that fear instinct at all yet they're poisonous unlike our UK spiders. The monster camel spiders did help me get over my fear of house spiders since they're nowhere near as scary lol

Don't want to trigger your fear further, but almost ALL spiders are venomous !

If it make you feel any better, most venom isn't strong enough to harm anything human-sized, or their fangs can't penetrate our skin.......most,that is !

A few years back, mrs w had felt poorly for a week or so. No energy, dizzy, bit of a rash etc. The doctor was stumped as to what it was so sent her to the hospital for tests. After umpteen blood tests for different things it was diagnosed as a spider bite. Can't remember what they prescribed, but once they'd worked out what it was, she was back to "normal."

They had problems with White tail spiders in Adelaide which caused necrosis of tissue like that, less likely to kill than some spiders but more likely cause horrible damage

f***ing horrors them camel spiders lol.

When I was in Australia I woke Obe morning and could hear this tapping noise. Looking towards the window I could see a huntsman spider as big as my hand standing on the outside window sill and had its two front legs up just tapping on the fly screen like he wanted to come in. Made me shudder.
