Getting Them Right.

Got two dogs yesterday a bit of a sorry state but couldn't leave them it wasn't fair (I'm a bit soft lol) getting them on some good food and going to get them fit, they've not been socialised well especially they younger one. Anyone got any tips on getting them right it would be much apriciated.

I think that's what I'm going to concentrate on most to start with then hopefully everything else will fit in place

Physical side is easy. Just feed them decent grub and give them plenty of exercise.

 

Mental side is more difficult when started off badly and depending how old can last a lifetime!

 

Expose them to as much different noises, smells and sights as possible. Patience is a necessity with backwards ones! Sometimes deeply annoying and frustrating to deal with.

 

I was always fond of the underdog myself, so fair play to you. I sometimes wonder about some working dog men who think dogs are machines or simple tools? Bit more to them than that if you want to get the best out of them.

Fair play to you Barbarian 1990, its a good thing you have done and at least they are in with a chance now, I've taken a few rescue terriers in down the decades and the first thing is getting them free of parasites (worms,fleas,etc, get some weight and condition into them but most of all it takes care and plenty of time along with a lot of patience, it is the greatest feeling no more than to bring them on and make decent terriers out of them, I have a 10 yrs old bitch here I rescued from Rotheram, she weighed 6lb when she was found next to her dead litter sister along with a dead lurcher,she had broken ribs and damaged legs but I took her home with me, the lad was jailed for 18 months, I did offer to sort him out properly when he came out of jail but the rescue women would not give me his address, it was not that long sorting her out, gaining her trust took a while and she loved my mrs much more than me, I put that down to it being a male that had beaten her, she would run away and shiver like a wreck if anybody had a baseball type cap on and I remember the first time she seen me use a spade ratting she ran back to the van thinking god knows what but we got there with her, 12 months later you would never think she was the same bitch, she lived for work 12 months later and never looked back but I have never hit her in any way, a stern no was all I have ever used to control her, she can be a bit guarded around strangers and does not like kids very much but that is manageable, she knows when my wife is coming home from work 5 mins before she gets through the door, she is very loyal and she will live here till the day she dies, I bred a litter of pups off her when she was 3yrs and this really settled her down,she was an excellent mother and passed great work ethic into her pups,she will work anything and lives for going out so "good luck" as it can be testing at times, WM

If you can get them in on the sofa with you when watching TV it will

Speed up the process without even realising it. When trying to do it outdoors sometimes it's easy be too pushy introducing to many things at once. They are like women they love a bit of heavy petting on the sofa, hand feed them and bring them on long walks and they will turn from emotional wrecks into bearable company.

Cheers all for the comments, still early days yet but they are better today then yesterday the younger one ripped out his terrier box to get with me yesterday they love affection and they are the same being better with women then men.

Try and get them around kids of a responsible age that will play with them without frighting them worse and also a 3rd party dog that is friendly with dogs and kids will give the other 2 confidence to be stroked and played with.

Sounds like you'll be able to turn them round if they're seeking out affection from you already that's a good sign, build that bond and get some good grub down them the rest will fall into place.

Really pleased with them today quite in kennel not had them with kids yet but will do, had them off lead today a bit ignorant bit they don't respond to their name but will come to me when I whistle. They are so greedy will eat till they collapse if I let them

Then food will be your "Key" in training them up, small titbits on recall or anything you wish to reinforce will work, they may get jealous of each other if you"re taking them out together, first sign of trouble I would walk them separate, it will be you that they will fight over so watch for any early signs, "good luck", WM

Yeah your right there noticed it a bit last night they had a bit of a fall out because they both wanted a fuss, I'm moving my kennels to my mums to make space for my new kennel block so probably going to send one to my mums and leave one at mine so can concentrate on them individually.
