Emperor And Brilliant Emerald Dragonfly

Recommended Posts

I have been a bit slack with my dragonflies this year with only two species in the bag.

Both taken at 300mm manual focus. Took a few goes to get them but great fun and worth it to see these stunning insects at their best (in flight).

Stunning pics!

That must take some skill using manual focus

Thanks

Nik manual is easier than auto focus. Most dragons patrol a territory so you roughly know where they are going so I set up focus at a spot where they might come then just tweak the focus when they are in the frame. The are quite contrasty so you can tell when you have it sharp if you are quick enough.

Do you use the same technique with birds? I think this might be better than relying on the autofocus which is a bit slow on my camera

No I will use AF for birds in flight, only use manual if shooting through reeds or leaves and camera can't focus.
