springfield 20
A question on Hare Habbitat. One a walk the other week I was mooching through wet, soggy mud the grass was pretty much none existent, I saw 2 get up in front of me and dissappear into some woodland. I'm really shocked to have seen some in this terrain. There wad alot more higher and dryer land further up the hill. Anyone else came across any in surprising environments. Quote Link to post

Saluki246 1,053
This time of the year they are starting to mate and seem to go a bit silly and are found all over the place. 1 Quote Link to post
Blueboybilly 164
I see them on freshly ploughed and newely sowed fields all of the time on the shoot. Might be because they can dig a seat really easily and they are still difficult to spot to be honest 1 Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
Seen plenty on bog ground but I see more living in forestry blocks than anywhere else here in west cork. Quote Link to post

Greyman 29,956
I have bolted a hare from a land drain with terriers when such things were considered acceptable, quite a surprise when your expecting a fox to pop out, have also seen a few in boggy ground when there was far nicer grassland around them, had a hare run up to my border Russell cross and start boxing around it in March, and had one run into my legs when the dogs were on it, that's about all my strange hare encounters and all took place in the early 80s when I could Quote Link to post
Fat-Ferret 857
You would only look in a good damp rushy field round here.... Quote Link to post

redquil 219
Gas works North Sheilds ,in industrial estate just up from Shields too. A lad told me and I know he was right that some were also on waste land 7 mile further up Tyne. He caught a couple and brought em to mine. They were in cracking fettle adult and looked oldish however they only weighed 4 to 5lb at best. Regarding rural hares ive seen em from the wettest places to cottage gardens. As Maximus Ferret says they love forestry its very surprising how many you see leaving when it is beaten or drawn with hounds more so in hard weather. I reckon they are a lot more versatile than most give them credit for. 3 Quote Link to post

redquil 219
Wagon driver told me there was some on old Siemens factory site not long since LPD. Those populations must be very isolated now with new blood not being able to get in yet they are still there. I had some great sport in that area many years ago coursing the very ancestors of those hares and I know Maximus Ferret did to! Seen some on telly in a grave yard somewhere that were very relaxed grazing in the daylight. Grand and versatile survivors. On a different note was told Blue Hares have been seen in Cheviots for first time for years off a very reliable source. 2 Quote Link to post
low plains drifter 10,879
That's where the three hares were that I saw at siemens, when they started building on that land there was a lot of hares to be seen, counted sixteen one time, only used to see the odd two or three even on the lamp when it was farmland the habitat was ideal with the plantations everywhere, was on the southern side of the Cheviots the other day saw more roe deer than hares, be good to see the blue hares was a good bit of snow up on the tops 1 Quote Link to post
