Rabbiting Dog - Working Pedigree Whippet Vs Racing Pedigree Whippet

Recommended Posts

Would like to here from the people who work pedigree whippets. I have listened to a few people and some say you need to get a working bred - bigger framed dog around the 21"-22" and 30+lbs and others have said that the lighter framed pedigree racing breds are quicker and better on the turn and make very good rabbiting dogs. I would be very interested to here any views from people that actually work either or both types or have seen them work. Many thanks.

well suppose you can only go on what you see work, i had none ped track whippet bitch, 20in 20lb great on rabbits in the lamp, and put few bends into a daytime hare , not a hare dog but could catch the odd few. down the track seen males 30-32 lb game little strong dogs , would pile in a fox , so it what size are the track dogs you are seeing regards hunting the ones i seen were good dogs

Had racing whippets and worked them good little dogs but not in the same class as the non peds

Do you mean for racing or working. Seen loads of fast non peds but any i know of that worked suffered with injury a lot. Don't know about the kc type racing dogs, i know a lad who got a kc racing pup to work will have to ask how it is coming on.

I've got two Mike Brown bed working whippets at the moment. decent enough dogs, but personally the idea of a specific working whippet type is, I think, just a selling technique. The best dog of this type I had came from non ped racing blood background.

I don't think working types are any more robust than other types. I may be wrong. Just my opinion.

It's been proven over time that non ped xs ped will give ya the best on both track and field ,bilko was swift hawk non ped xs moss field Margaret ped whippet this animal had a massive influence in the non ped racing scene plus I've seen a thirty eight pound male kill long ears in 2s and 3s take the red fella and did it well plus back in the seventies nearly everything run round here on rabbits under the beam was bilko stuff in one way or another.atb bunnys.

Being a Moucher,...and only specializing in rabbits,...I've always favored the smaller,..quicksilver types...

There is no point in keeping another type,...I would not do it justice....

Originally,..I pushed the Non-Peds,..they are fabulous, purpose bred,.specialist racing machines,...and on the track,.NOTHING can match their phenomenal early pace and determined sprint, to grip that rag or lure,..BUT,..in dense woodland,.brash and blackthorn ditch bottom,..they are simple a wasted superstar...

For roustabout rabbiting, a task that befits a big chested powerhouse of a durable jukel,..I favor what is commonly called, a Working Whippet..

Originally a KC critter,..possibly an offshoot of the Pedigree Coursing Whippet,..I now cross these svelte runners to Sheepdogs...

This is a game, fraught with danger,..and if a useless, mongrel cur is to be produced, then this is surely the way to do it,.however,.if you know what you are aiming for,..you can sometimes achieve a worthwhile result....I don't ask much from a lurcher,.. these days...

My mind set has changed, it had to...

So,..the whippet,.in all its many diverse shapes and sizes, suits me ,.. just dandy..

There's a lot more to a working dog than speed for me, my kc show bred is no speed machine but I would say she is a good catch dog day and night and she is the best marking dog I have owned. some places I run her a non ped would kill its self.

When I say this I'm talking about the land I work these days, on other land speed can come in handy but still would go for the kc race bred over the non ped for more speed.
