Doxhope Deerhounds

Recommended Posts

The line is pretty much gone. There are still dogs around with Doxhope ancestors but once they are more than a generation away they are no longer producing that exact type of hound. My own deer/grey bitch carries Doxhope blood but I wouldn't call her a Doxhope type or line.

Anyone work them lines be interesting to see the type of dogs that come from this line

I like my bitch and she's turned out good for what I need but I wouldn't advise a straight deer/grey cross for most people. Reading through all the past threads about them on here it seems like a lot have had poor and indifferent dogs of that breeding for whatever reason. Even when there were well worked strains of deerhound about this cross still needed careful entering to avoid discouragement then plenty of work as their enthusiasm built up. I've heard of plenty quitting on fox after being bitten the first time. I've also heard of plenty taking foxes and doing well on deer and hare ( before the ban of course). A lot depends on the owner and on the individual animal.

My own is only average on rabbits. My collie cross is much better, being more nimble and she has a better nose too.

The deer cross will catch half a dozen rabbits in an hour easy enough but why a 70lb bitch is overkill for rabbits really. She's more keen on bigger stuff but that's illegal these days anyway.

If you want a big beautiful animal that'll catch enough rabbits for you and your family with a few over to sell, and win rosettes for showing then get one and use good judgement entering it.

If you want to dice with prosecution it could suit you too but there'd be easier choices.

Good luck if you choose one but as I say, for most things there'd be better choices and if you do get one and it turns out to be good then you should find a suitable mate as the good ones are getting rarer all the time.

Alan Charles is more interested in trying to breed fawn deerhounds than sound working dogs. I was up at him last year not impressed. He may have worked his dogs years ago but that's about it he even told me he doesn't

Good few off that line don't fail though I had one sold it doing my lc at the time went to Wicklow and made the grade single handed
