Tail Tip Injury

Has anyone had any experience with a tail tip injury in their dogs? My old man did a cracking job of catching my pups tail in the kitchen door while feeding him when i was at work. He lost roughly half an inch in the door, then another inch at the vets! Seems to be healing ok but its a right ballache and not confident on it healing completely after hearing no end of horror stories, hes 7 days in and no infection as yet i'm saltwater cleaning and purple spraying the stitched stump at the moment!

 

Worse case scenario, has anyone had any experience with a docked runner if i end up having to go down that route?

If its healing and your keeping it clean I wouldn't worry just give it time and all will be well ... I've seen lurchers with half a tail work perfectly well ........

My brother had a coll/bull/grey bitch -bitten by an adder on the end of her tail-she had 1/3rd removed by the vet.never made a difference to her running style-some dirty b*****ds stole her in the end.keep it clean and dog be ok. Atb dc

Put my lurcher bitch in kennels one year and she knocked the tip off her tail on the mesh runs, for about two weeks, every time she wagged her tail hard it bled like f**k, but after that it was fine, I think tails are built to take a good knock or two.

Aye a closed the door not realising dog was stood there and chopped bout inch of his tail off just put his tail in some flour and sat down with him for few hours holding tail so he didn't wag it as it would have splattered blood all over.

 

Kept eye on it for next few days and was okay and free from infection

My old dog had the same happen years ago, it healed fine but still opens up sometimes if he's in an enclosed area and he gets to wagging it. It usually happens in the hallway and takes ages to wipe everything down afterwards.

Vet wrap whole tail with a hair roller on end of tail will keep air flow. Wound powder each day

My dogs missing about 3 inches of he's tail it was a pain in the ass too get healed but once it was on the right track it came good never affected he's running at all
