From my understanding if the party split they will become the official opposition with the majority of mps and take all the privileges that come with it leaving corbyn and his cronies out in the rain. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/what-would-happen-if-labour-splits-a7144666.html

That's assuming all 172 MPs that voted no confidence in him would split off to form another party, as unlikely as Corbyn losing the leadership election for the reasons I outlined in my reply to BlackBriar.

Also assuming they would win the by-elections that would undoubtedly be called for...

It just seems to me corbyn is dammed if he does and dammed if he dont sort of thing ....it's going to be interesting to see how it all pans out thats for sure..... also taking on all these new members many of what I believe will be radicalist will only be a short term fix but eventually do more damage than good imo

It's definitely going to be very interesting times for the Labour party over the next few months, I don't think anyone can say with any certainty how it's all going to pan out.

The bit in bold is a good or bad thing depending on what you want to achieve, a real socialist party or a government with the Labour brand but none of the principles it was founded on. Taking the Labour party back to it's roots as a grassroots labour movement is preferable to power at any cost to me and a lot of other Labour voters and supporters. I just can't see bringing in 300,000 new members as a bad thing for a party that's supposed to be all about the grassroots.

Love him or hate him Corbyn has engaged a lot of folk with politics again and can mobilise some seriously impressive support, rasing nearly £4 million in four days is a seriously impressive achievement

OK....why is immigration good for the UK.....From where I'm sitting the only people who welcome it with open arms are either ethnics that hate the British way of life....OR owners of big business that

No party that supports mass unchecked, uncontrolled immigration can claim to be the party of the working man, regardless of all their claims. The people most affected negatively and the biggest lose

On that last point, can Labour MPs be deselected at any time, or just when a general election is called ?

I'm thinking that there won't be an election until 2020, which might bolster the rebels, if they know the are safe until then ?

It's done in the lead up to an election, under the current rules the CLP has a vote to trigger the selection process and then they're given a list of candidates by the NEC to vote on with their current MP automatically being on the list. We've got conference in September though where we may see a change of the rules around deselection to make it easier. You're right though it could well give them a bit more confidence.

I'd also expect to see a lot of votes of no confidence in the rebels when CLP meetings are allowed to start up again after the leadership election ;)

Thanks for that, 'Dave'. I'm following this with interest, even though I'm not a Labour supporter......

Always happy to have a natter about politics

Regardless of your own politics this whole situation is very interesting, at the end of the day it could change the whole political landscape of the country depending on how things pan out.

BGD, do you think that Corbyn will still be the leader at the next GE?

I'd say it's pretty likely but honestly everything is so up in the air at the moment who can really say.

I could see him possibly stepping aside for one of the younger more charismatic up and coming left wing MPs though, someone like Richard Burgon or Clive Lewis...

I just don't think he stands any chance at all...I have not actually spoke to anyone at all who likes him...... do you think he's 'too' old Labour? or too far left?

How many folk do you talk to that would vote Labour regardless of who was leader though? ;)

The only way to find out how electable Labour are under Corbyn is to fight a GE but the results of elections he's fought so far have been pretty fecking good and he has massive grassroots support so I'd say he's a better choice for leader than anyone the right of the party has put forward. At the end of the day with the loss of Scotland and rise of UKIP in certain Labour strongholds any Labour leader is going to have a hard time leading the party to power, I'd rather spend the wilderness years rebuilding the grassroots of the party and making the internal party structures more democratic than just trying to ape the Tories from the opposition benches in the hope of getting a bit of power.

Clive Lewis, a soldier who served in Afghanistan, is the favourite successor to Corbyn among folk I've spoken to...

Definitely a vegan hunt sab who's never done a days work in his life

No idea on his views on fieldsports TBH and of course he's anti illegal immigration, I don't think there's anyone in mainstream politics who's pro illegal immigration  No idea on his dietary habits either. Well considering he served Britain in the armed forces putting his life on the line in Afghanistan I'd say it's fair to say he's pro Britain and all people that live here

You can Google him yourself if you want to find out more ;)

It will come as no surprise to anyone when I say that don't share your cause....but I have to say that I admire your commitment to it.

If that's the way you want your party to go, and you're willing to stand up and be counted, then I'd wish you every success !
