Bit Of Advice Please

If your dog is steady on the retrieve and is retrieving without issues there is no harm in introducing dead game. Avoid wood pigeon though, the feathers are dense and come out leaving clumps in the dogs mouth. I've heard the advice about putting them in women's stockings to stop that, but best avoided for the training of a young dog. Don't worry if he's a bit unsure at first. Get him running out for dummies and retrieving, and leave or throw some dead game. Avoid any game that has been smashed around or shot at close range, it could be like asking your pup to retrieve a bag of mince, the reward should be the retrieve not a meaty treat. Be aware of his size and strength, don't overstretch him by attempting to retrieve big or heavy game. It is probably best to start with a half grown rabbit, partridge or feral pigeon. Leave the hares and geese until he's older. Don't allow him to mouth it too much at this stage.
