i like a smooth double coat. thick downy undercoat with a longer guard hair. a thick hide is just as important. cant stand the thin skinned short haired coat you see on a lot of terriers these days. they are like a half shut knife in half a hour.

Best coat I've seen on a russell is a strong looking dog owned by a Welsh lad on here only seen it in a photo but you can see the density of it

I agree with Bryan and Neil. Having a bit of weight on is as good as a good jacket.

I too agree with Bryan & Neil.A dog even a little underweight can really be affected in cold damp weather.

 

I just wanted to know which coat and why folks preferred.

Mine get washed and under a heat lamp for the night Lee. Starting my new block of kennels and will be incorporating a special kennel/sick bay with lamps and tube heaters.finally deck and sort out the rest of the garden and keep her in doors off my back-moaning about how many kennels already -you not having more dogs blah blah blah lol.atb dc

 

Admit it Daniel, if the wife chucks you out for coming home late and drunk you've made a nice bed for yourself, LOL.

 

Been there done that, only it wasn't the wife, it was the mother.

what can I say neil-you got it in one lol-5 feet I got to be careful as the wife does boxing and capack?some sort of dirty streetfighting I think?all I know is it f***ing hurts if she wallops me one.atb dc

uru, i like the border terrier coat, just finished stripping out the 2 i have, now they have a short under coat which will be fine through the warmer months, top coat will come back and do its job in the colder months.

ok uru, yes they have a good thick skin on them, i think the borders coat goes from soft undercoat right up to a good dence rough coat, which just about covers all types of coat,.

i have to agree a good border coat takes a bit of beating. and they generally have a thick skin.

i would say i dont do biast. she has a great weatherproof coat.

 

stripped down to her underwear .put this dog at a radiator and she would be seriously unhappy.

No offence was ment mate we all are biast to our own dogs if we are honest and as for the rad jib I've never seen a dog unhappy to be near one not even a mates malamute

no offence taken lee and the jibe was the truth my mutts live indoors most of the time. they all like the radiators apart from bree she prefares to lay in the kitchen on the cold floor.

I've always liked the coat and thick skin that Border Terriers have, just a shame the show brigade got hold of them and ruined the job.

Preferably smooth coat but as long as it works I can't be to fussy
