Terrier X Whippet

Hello everybody , im new to this site but i already have a little pack consisting of 2 terriers and a whippet i mainly hunt small fields with reed beds and brambles i am looking for a dog to come lamping with me and the whippet but also have a go bushing with the terriers. Would u think a terrier whippet x would be ideal and what type? thanks

Think the answer was in the first post. Yup end up with a dog that is compromised on speed for a decent runner and size for an out and out bushing dog. If you can live with the compromise then I would guess you could have plenty of fun with this x. I have seen a fair few whippet x Beddies struggle daytime on bunnies when the odds are stacks against them. I will always stick to dogs for specific jobs and I am not the most demanding of owners atb

 

A terrier x whippet is never going to have the speed to run a rabbit down in the open on a regular basis. But - provided it's not too big - it should have the speed to run one down in cover. As to whether or not it's too big to be useful, I think that'll depend on the size of the parents. You get both big and small whippets just like some terriers are much bigger than others.

 

I guess I'm biased, but having got one I certainly wouldn't want to be without one. Mine's about 15" tts and she flies through all but the thickest cover with no bother at all. And for the sort of ferreting I do, which is predominantly brambly/thorny hedgerows, she's perfect. She regularly catches them in the hedge and if she can't catch them she'll either push them out where there's a chance with either the lurcher or a longnet, or else she'll run the hedge behind them and mark wherever they next go to ground so you get a second bite at the cherry.

He's about 21 - 22 tts, more than capable of catching in the open day or night. He will bush but usually lets the terrier do that for him. He is a whiner round the yard and in the car which drives me nuts but he's silent when working which is the main thing. He is coming up 7 years old and hasn't let me down yet. When we got him we were told he'd be too slow for rabbits and too small for anything else which he has proved wrong ever since! He's probably the best dog I've had - if I could clone him I would!

He's nearly seven and yes, first x bred by dogger on here. Sire was a small russell dog put over a non ped whippet bitch I believe.

Lovely dog Tyla looks a useful one. That has thrown huge for a 1st x Russell whippet though at that size not the norm that one. If they all ended up like yours I would guess they would be more popular. Did the rest of the litter end up similar size? Atb

I thought that. Maybe because the Dam was the whippet?

And a non-ped at that? Possibly some greyhound a bit back?

Yes, very big. Especially as the sire was a small russell.
