Louth Rgc

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) have been in contact with the NARGC office to seek the help of clubs in Galway (particularly Galway East), Offaly, Westmeath, Longford, Meath, Kildare, Louth and Dublin in a move to stop the illegal hunting of hares which has become a big problem in the aforementioned counties. Gangs are apparently turning up in fields with lurchers and causing damage not only to the local hare populations but leaving a litany of other damage behind also to property and livestock. Weekends are when the activity is most prevalent. A pilot scheme will be trialled this coming weekend, February 27th and 28th, which if successful, may be the basis to further develop it to include other activities such as unlawful tourist shooting. Club members are being asked to actively cooperate and be especially vigilant in their own areas this weekend and report any suspicious activity to the following phone number which will be immediately reacted to by either the NPWS and/or the Gardai:

Telephone: 087-237 1959

Please be mindful that this is a trial project. If the number is not answered, leave a message as it may be that another caller is already on the line. We are assured that the call will be returned promptly. NPWS have also asked that this trial not be published on any social media as it will alert those who are the target of the initiative. Can RGC Secretaries in the counties affected please copy this to all the clubs in your areas.

Kindest regards,

Des Crofton

Thought u could run hares just not in competition or organised events?

Thats northern Ireland. In Ireland hare coursing is licenced and only coursing clubs get granted licenses

a mate of mine walked along the top of a remote hill last week,he came across a field fenced off with a 5 ft fence around the whole perimiter, inside he said to me were roughly 30 hares all scuttering about, the area was around the size of a football pitch he reckoned, on the way back a quad and 2 blokes with a shotty ,jumped off and threathened him and told him never to return, luckily he had terriers with him.I contacted a very good friend of mine into the greyhounds and he knew exactly where this place was..We go out and the dog runs one hare and theres hell to pay,but its ok for them to net and keep captive as many as they want, licence or not its pure bullshit.
