Broken Leg

How many of you would run a dog after its broke its leg mine broke its leg a year ago and I ain't ran her since I want to get her fit again and run her on some pretty flat terrain it was a clean break it was roughly half way between her knee knuckle and her shoulder joint her speed and agility hasn't reall been affected I'm just worried it could break why she twists and turn on runs she's a old dog about 8 but last season was probably the best iv ever saw her run I just want to bunny bash with her what's everyone's thoughts on this

If it was my dog i wouldn't have got it fixed if i wasn't gonna run her again, she'd have been pts.

Get the dog fit and go for it. If all's gone well with the vet there should be no problem...

Leg breaks if simple breaks and fractures are set properly and treated right why shouldnt they be strong enough ,the bone that repairs the break or fracture is usually stronger than the original, So if it wasnt broken for a reason such as genetic or mineral deficiency and by accident get her fit. Plenty of people break legs and go back to sport so technology is more advanced than the old shoot it days,

its up to you mate,its your call and your dog,only you know what treatment,cost and time ,its taken to put her right,all credit to you forgetting her sorted lots of lads wouldnt have been arsed,at 8yrs imight be tempted to let her do abit of ferreting ,but certainly wouldnt run her too much on the lamp,arthritis and stiffness in the leg willprobably affect her if you work her too much and too long.atb

I got a bitch laid up through ligament damage and my vet who is also the local greyhound bone man said it'd have been better for the dog if it had been a clean bone break as 6 weeks mending time then a period of getting her fit again and all would be good to go again..At 8 your dog should be being slowed down a bit anyway so look at anything she does as a bonus but take it easy with her if i were you when she is back out again,good luck with her..

Agreed with desert but....

 

I've broke my legs 3times and yes the bone envelope around the break is very strong but it actually creates an inherent weakness further up or down the bone.

 

Get the dog fit and go for it but don't pressure the dog for greatness let her find her way

Thanks a car hit her I took the pot off myself after 7 weeksits been almost 12months the dog doesn't run any different at all the dogs my companion always look after my dogs if it can be fixed no point in putting her down it was my own fault for slipping her near a road thanks lads the battery's on charge now first time in a year looking forward to it

My dog broke her leg and had a pin put in it was a long recovery but once fit again she was back to normal like it never happened

Thanks I think I'll have to take the old girl out me and my partner have just moved in together with our little boy so hopefully get her fit and maybe get next season out of her to I'll give the dog her due since iv had her she's been through the wars with a few things I can't mention also has fought threw parvo or at least I think it was the point is she's a tough dog and very strong headed and loyal and has been the best dog iv owned thanks for all the advice and positive opinions iv taken it all in my stride and can't wAit to get her out x
