Marshy ,,I was told Romanys lived in bender tents,,made from canvas and hazel poles,,befor having wagons and caravans,,is that true and is that what that tent type thing is,,,.?

Great pics again mate,,,and that one of yours mud,,,excellent stuff

I think the kids slept in blender tents next to the Waggons aswell...they were made from the same canvas material that the bow top is made of...young hazel shoots bent over to make a dome with the front lifted up facing the fire.
as Navek says mate although I would've imagined before the wagon they had tents .

had a bit of a thing acouple years ago were I I was very intrested in the nomadic lifestyles of difrent cultures and how they lived and travler the Mongols ( Mongolian ) Romany and the nenets people (raindeer herders ) and they all seem to have started of in tilt carts and then pitching up tents after they found somewhere to graze the herds but as for the Romanys they traveled on tilt carts or on foot then lived in bender tents/tinker tents anywhere they could find work and place to tether out there horse to graze..they were called the romanichal people who moved on foot from place to place to find work then later they bred the gypsy cobs to pull living Waggons

Not just the kids slept in them and those families with just a flat cart would have as well,i've lived in many a bender(the tent not the faggot type :tongue2: ) and i used to be able to build one without using string to tie the poles just woven through and you could swing off the frame, but not built one for many a year now.We use to use car windscreens as windows along the bottoms of them.Bloody grand things to live in and more room than my bow top used to have in it,hardest bit about a bender tent is getting the canvas tarps as plastic ones create to much condensation. Also building one with a tunnel entrance like a igloo keeps the wind out when you go in or out of them and it sure is living on ground level with the bugs  ,but probebly the best times of my life living so simply without the worry of modern shite you don't really need..man :victory::laugh: .

Grand pics lads and keep them comming for sure  ..

Important point there Fireman,..an in depth knowledge,..valid and accurate comments, born of genuine experience,...how fecking rare..

I grew up on a remote smallholding amidst the Welsh Marches,..I had very little schooling or formal education,. but, after a family break up,.I followed my Father to the Kentish Hop Fields.

We worked the sheep, bred our cur dogs,...controlled the shushis, and trapped vermin together..

Spent my formative years with genuine dark faced Roms,.old style Gypsy folk,...the Boswells and the Lees.....I learnt a whole lot about,.a whole lot of things,..how to chor,.how to win a fight, but mostly,.. how to survive.

Keep the pictures coming lads,..cos, times they are a 'changin...and we should always remember our past...

All the best, Phil...
