Recommended Posts

That could protentially frustrate him, my bitch gets frustrated when she can smell/hear them in the hole but they not bolting! She whines and digs lol little fecker needs to not mess the nets up yet i dont want to discourage her from marking! Trainings never easy half the time your learning as much as the dog.

lol mine worked out ok as far as that goes very patient and behaved around the nets now

Never understood taking young dogs to watch...may aswell put a lamping DVD on for it and save yourself the walk

Facts are, a good'un will take a whole lot of abuse, and the best of the best will take a lot of fecking up,...sadly,.nowadays,..we think to much and are scared shitless, to 'let the dog, see the rab

I have found with mine catching the rabbits is the easy part and no rush it is every thing else that needs to be sorted first like stock, training and socialising. At least if I could have my time agai

Definitely individual dog !!

My blue bitch by 6 months she was tracking deer and being a head of older dogs always hunting off had to stop taking her certain places just incase she bumped into something she couldn't handle but took her lamping and didn't miss bitch never looked back !

My Hancock pup only now at 16 moths am I seeing the stuff my other bitch showed at 6 months and she's really starting the impress for a useless Hancock shit she isn't half bad and corrected a few older dogs already and a very very keen Bitch futures bright for this one

Well everyone is entitled to there say and I didn't know that you all felt strongly about it but all seem to be around the 8-10 mark. My view is when ever you fancy taking your dog out day or night take it !! It's valuable time in the dogs training to understand the simple commands your going to be using the day command is different to night my dog has been coming out since a couple of weeks after his final injections and between that time and upto the age of seven month he learned what he needed to. My way has been pulled to bits but as we are now he walks with or without the lead and only going for the rabbits when I say. he's down the beam every time even if he can see what's been lamped or not which is often as he's only small. I invited a mate of here up for the night but it was spoiled by the unreal surface water in the fields anyway I have no problem letting the dog go for what some call haven't got a chance and wasting your time on slips but blades not daft he has a choice go for it or not ether way it's up to him which was witnessed by my mate and his mate . I put the lamp on a rabbit creeping down a hedge some 200+ yards he made his way over coursed it down hedge picked it up and brought it back but then he would look at another one and leave it .to me he learned his training before the seven month mark commands retrieve everything now he's in my eyes perfect for what I do day and night so like I said before your dog want learn how to catch it's pray sitting at home but get that all important one on one training in now .ps I never ran him hard under seven month but he did chased a few until we got it Wright

So let me get this right you are slipping the dog on 200yd rabbits that are creeping down the hedgerow ?and when you slip the dog he's decides wether to run it or not.dogs ain't stupid mate yea they will run for 1 maybe 2 that are in the distance and against a hedgerow.but they soon realise they are wasting there time and effort.

you could be right with (individual dogs), but my last 2 dogs both have caught rabbits at 6 month old, Bryn had caught 90 odd rabbits by 12 months old, and Buck near enough the same at 12 months. and I had Buck out with Bryn when Buck was 9 weeks old, he was just watching and picked it up dead quick. Bryn still catching rabbits at 8 year old had 8 the other night, and Buck best bag been 36 and could have got 45 if had wanted to push him  . so for me as long as the pup enjoying it and not bored with it all - 6 month old no prob , as said it comes down to each pup , my 2 had deff had no probs they found it easy catching rabbits

I dont know if its already been said but a dogs growth plates have not finished developing until 15months of age. Its ok taking dogs out as pups and letting them chase, but when that pup builds enough muscle to be powerful then it can do itself damage that will last a lifetime. I think this applies more to the dogs that have a high percentage of Greyhound because of the weight and power they produce when chasing. Having said that a bloke I knew years ago completely knackered a kc whippet dog up by racing it too soon. It was the fastest thing he ever bred and was winning against good company at twelve months of age when it damaged its shoulder the vet told him the damage was permanent. I think thats why you are not allowed to race a greyhound until its 15months.

Play galloping is a different thing to chasing when a dog is pushing everything hes got.

I know people run dogs earlier and that includes myself but then my dogs are not that fast. When ever Ive had 3/4 grey 1/4bull I wouldnt dream of running them on the lamp before 15months.

I think that if your taking you 7-10 month old pup out for an occasional lamp once every 2 weeks say for 1/2 runs I don't think it's doing them large amounts of harm, but if you want to be out all time with a pup that age then don't, give it chance to grow because excessive hard runs can cause damage.

Mr King in my reply I said I took him every where with me never said worked , even when with other dogs like that night he's good stays close always watching I can put the lamp any part of a field and he'll be there anticipating that there's something there , I'm not the type to drag a dog round a field forcing it to chase and miss cos it's petrified that it's going too get a kicking when it gets back , also I said creeping I'm sure if it was running he'd of left it which he did about ten mins beforehand, I'm sure my mate will add something if he feels like it , as that was the first time he'd seen blade and myself

The fella asked for everyone's opinion that was mine , so there pmsl atb mark

Or believe me he's not wasting his time catching more than he misses, not only can he run in straight line like most blade can actually turn and turn fast .to see him work would surprise the most hardcore running dog men as he already has
