I think breeding terriers is similar to breeding game dogs in that you're breeding for mental traits rather than physical and because of that as soon as you start culling physical characteristics that

Ken Goulds Nigger was undershot by an inch and he bred him extensivly, your not talking from experience just speculation.....best you sit this debate out. A man once said your better to say nothing and

Lurchers you really dont sound like your talking from experience. Have you read a load of D.B Plummer books and become an expert? Dillydog is 100% right we all throw a percentage of bad mouths, bad coa

Besides the fact the pups not gone win many shows is a pup being under shot a problem?

The bitch I’ve got has a bad mouth

but is a very good fox dog.

i wouldn’t put her into any ‘ breeding program ‘ though as you’d probably have it , or the chance of it forever.

Isn't too much close breeding the cause of an undershot mouth in dogs?I know you have to keep it close to cement lines and traits but if one part is not right what about the rest, organs etc.I know dogs with entropion usually have multiple unseen health issues.

I have limited access to good terriers in my area so when I seen something I liked I just inbred from that point forward.Thats when I first seen extremely undershot terriers.Another generation of inbreeding and they were 50% undershot now its seemed to level out at 50-60%.Thats also when mine started throwing bat ears.I believe these are recessive traits that shine through inbreeding.2 reasons I inbred to this point 1-limited access to good terriers 2-small weedy terriers are needed for digging in Dixie. My hardest terrier is 13lbs bitch and an inch undershot but she can fit to an otter with ease.

In Dixie very few if any seriously dig so I'm not afforded the luxury of selecting for ears or straight mouth.I hope to own a good-looking terrier some day.

This is my 2 cents worth. I'm Sorry stuck at home bored and rambling.

Only mucking around with the ear thing Rick,as said looks mean little in a working dog. It's not the look that worries me it's possible health problems from continual inbreeding, you end up with super workers with deep traits but not sure if it affects health and lifespan but don't know if this is an issue with such specialised animals. Also stuck at home in the middle of the bush atm,get fined if your caught travelling.

I think it does affect health.I have some bitches who are 8 and never came in heat.Smaller litter size.I also get one in every litter that is large and robust the picture of health.I have not seen any major health deffects but if you can't reproduce it limits what you can do for sure.I have bred my male to some half cousins hoping to be able to continue. When inbreeding heat cycles change first in my opinion from seeing it in a few breeds.
