What a cracking thread.   I wanted a rabbiting dog, a ferreting companion more than anything I do like my lamping but wanted to concentrate more on daytime work. I knew what I wanted and in time the

I'm probably going to upset someone or other.   But I think if the dog can work the lamp, runs well enough and has a strike.   It's all down to two things - stamina and number of rabbits on the gr

This little lass could of been a specialist rabbit dog, all she's missing is 10" of height, more stamina, and bit of recall, other than that she does ok! At least she retrieves rabbits so that's a start! 8356f369f06972f8bc91ade83fce3c28_zpsn3sl

I know we're in the lurcher section, so technically "rabbit specialist" should probably mean a dog that catches rabbits, but i think anything that's runner x base blood that puts rabbits in the bag one way or another qualifies for the name? My little bitch had 8 rabbits in about 6 mooches over a couple of weeks last year, i was over the moon with that, i suppose its all relative to what floats your boat, if that makes sense?

A specialist in one part of the country might only be average in another. Some dogs just don't get the numbers in front of them because the land they hunt on doesn't hold them. These dogs will have to work hard, use their nose, hunt up to catch (in the day) at night they might only have a couple of runs but catch a small number that some dogs that have lots of game put in front of them might miss. I was out where I live now and my dog catches quite a few. If I take him to where I'm originally from then he's lucky to get a few runs. If I brought one of the lads dogs from up there down here and lamped then they might put my dog to shame!! IMO a specialist would need to be good on any ground but I'm happy for mine to be a specialist on just my and my mates permission!!

For a young dog he looked very good last time out mate, had a few to run too!!

Hope your bitch comes good new kid my dog never ran for a year and he done great today not holding his leg up and the fecking vet suggested to take the leg off

The dog belongs to my mate NL, watched it each season come on from a pup, she's 3 now and last season it all really started to click... He'll give her the best chance possible

Glad your dogs made a good recovery mate, nice one for sticking with it and proving the vet wrong

My eldest lads bitch, just under 22" tts, lethal on rabbits day or night, heart like a lion, and punches well above her weight. Beddy/grey sire to a DY bred ped whippet, bit of P Cork influence in the dam if i remember right ;)
