What a cracking thread.   I wanted a rabbiting dog, a ferreting companion more than anything I do like my lamping but wanted to concentrate more on daytime work. I knew what I wanted and in time the

I'm probably going to upset someone or other.   But I think if the dog can work the lamp, runs well enough and has a strike.   It's all down to two things - stamina and number of rabbits on the gr

Any reasonable lurcher should be able to catch rabbits in most places. The specialist, to me, is one that can do that, but excels in one particular area of its trade. These days, I like a dog to hunt, catch and retrieve, rather than run a beam or stand over a netted bury. The ones that Ive found do best at that all have a good dash of collie in there. But I am biased :tongue2:

I think it depends on the terrain you work and the amount of rabbits on that land, you can only catch whats in front of you, going back 25-30 years ago we would come back from Scotland with regular big bags 75-150 rabbits, we needed a dog with stamina and that could take a knock, we had a mixture of lurcher x lurchers and some sheepdog cur crosses, they did a days ferreting then back out on the lamp once dark. Later years the rabbit population has dwindled, lucky to get 20-25 on the lamp, the same bushing and ferreting, have been using a small ACD X Grew for last 7 years, good all round rabbiter, ferreter and bushing, strong built and works good cover.

The trick round here is speed and strike. Other ground requires a more robust type.

A happy medium would be plenty of whippet and greyhound blood with a splash of something to toughen it up, be that bull, beddy, wheaten or something else.

I'm breeding some 3/4 whippet 1/4 springers when my bitch comes in season, was going to use a 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy stud, but had a change of heart after seeing some pups to a full beddy out of her litter sister. Should be decent rabbit/ferreting dogs? Personally i'll be keeping one that goes more to the spaniel (if i get any like that?) for some more specialised work, might crash and burn, but you can only try your best?
