air gun ant 1,666
Is it something that you use or lose? I've always used my terriers and spaniels scruffs when going over a fence or style etc I've just always found it a good grabbing point when you need to get hold of your dog. I've got a little lurcher pup now and she keeps trying to jump on the sofa with the other dog, but can't quite reach yet so I grabbed her scruff to help her up. She screamed like a banchee! I understand lurchers have tighter skin but she's only 9 wk and still got a load of loose skin. I no I won't be able to pick her up over a fence (she will jump it I hope) but do people use the scruff on lurchers? I've never had a pup that had a problem with it, but this one doesn't like it lol

air gun ant 1,666
lurchers, even puppys dont need scruffing pal, they not terriers, tbh I not a fan of scruffing a terrier, but have done it if needed. Id never dream of scruffing a spaniel either tbh they a fair bit heavier. Pick em up.properly, or you will end up.with a nervous lurcher imoi don't mean I scruff them in a bad way, punishment wise or anything like like that. I've just always been able to pick my "smaller dogs" up by the scruff when needed and never had it bother them in slightest. But.. If you try it with a dog that hasn't had it's scruff used from a pup, the skin tightens, and they obviously wonder what the hells going on! Lol obviously I'm not thinking of scruffing a lurcher over a fence, I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on picking smaller dogs up by the scruff? It doesn't bother my little spaniel for the couple of seconds it takes to get over a fence, and it didn't bother my old terrier, but I had done it since they were pups. I have seen people try and do it to older dogs that arnt used to it, and it clearly distressed them and probably hurt them tbh? That's why I'm wondering if it's a "use it or lose it" kind of thing
nothernlite 18,268
Big heavy pups them are they not my pups could be lifted when younger but as they got heavier it's a no no
air gun ant 1,666
Yeah I won't be doing it again, and if she keeps growing as she is, she will be stepping on to the sofa by weekend anyway lol and I'll always get a hand under the spaniel if possible
oz0707 65
Have always used my dogs but only ever had terriers. Always done it from a young age and as far as I can tell doesn't bother them. If I'm lifting them for any time or distance I just use the scruff to lift then hand underneath
skycat 6,174
Most lurchers are far more sensitive all over than terriers or Spaniels as they have thinner skin and much less subcutaneous fat.
