A few types of "swims" where we're fortunate enough to fish..   The Exeter Canal before first light (Tench blowing everywhere on this morning).. The tidal Exe     First light at Hopes

I'm guessing I was about 14 when this was taken. That would make it 43 years ago. Eek ! Its possible I had hooked the bottom rather than a fish:)   This one was taken at the same spot yesterday a

Moved further down south recently the canal is a 5min walk so after years of barrowing around a ton of carp gear around packed lakes started fishing light. Drop shotting for perch and pre baiting like

Since we got back from holiday last Wednesday I've had a really bad run of luck. The dog went to ground after a coypu and it took me, the wife, the Maire, a farmer and his wife along with two spades, two picks, a chainsaw and a tractor to get the little barsteward out. That cost me two bottles of whiskey and a large cake to repay their kindness. The following day the car broke down costing me three hours work that I had to add onto another day meaning I couldn't fish after work as planned. Two lawnmowers have broken down and a fishing trip to the Vienne was a wash out due to a deluge upstream that caused floods in my area.

So, yesterday I wasn't surprised to find three diversions and two light controlled contraflows on my route to the Charente. When I did get to the dual carriageway, about 2.5km before my turn off I overtook a line of HGVs only for the second one from the front to commit to a five kilometre overtake causing me to miss the junction and add another 20 minutes to what should have been an  hour's journey.

Two hours on the first swim resulted in no bites so  went to another one about 3km away.

First cast resulted in a small barbel

Then things got better. Another two larger barbel and a small chub.

After the week I had endured I was chuffed that my luck had changed. I got another barbel around 5lb on my second 'last cast' as I was putting the chair away. I got into my car feeling that I had enjoyed a really lovely day and all my troubles were behind me. I turned the key and; Zilch, Nada, Nothing. Zero volts! I was on the river bank almost a kilometre down a narrow farm track between maize fields accessed from a tiny village that doesn't show on the Sat-Nav with a car full of fishing tackle and it was getting dark. When I walked back to a small medieval church that was the landmark for the recovery truck the door was open. The last of the sun was shining directly into the church, through the doorway and perfectly illuminating the cross at the far end.

Do you think someone is telling me something?
