No Ifs Or Butts ..........

Not just obesity, I'd be interested to see how much heart disease and cancers in general costs the tax payer and how much of it is preventable through pretty basic lifestyle changes.

People live in ignorance their whole lives, then come down with something serious and think they were just unlucky, or worse, that the government should have done more to help them change their bad ways. That whole responsibility thing again.

Bottom line, if we are going to have a socialist type health system, it becomes a bit difficult to then start picking and choosing who's eligible.

how about people who are over weight, but never gone hospital, worked 35 years paying taxes / and pay full national insurance as above 35-40 years . to me there not a drain on the NHS they keeping it going  my wife over weight a lot, and prob in the next few years as she gets older, will need some sort of treatment , prob to help her , and so she should she contributed for 40 years to it, and she never smoked either .!!

I'm not making judgements on who deserves what Bird fella. I just went off on a bit of a tangent with that post regarding how many people live their lives in ignorance of their health.

On another tangent regarding overweight people. I scanned over an article today about a US study that concluded 'fatness' has little to no bearing on health, cardiovascular fitness however does. So their belief is that fat people that are relatively fit are in fact much healthier than thin people that have poor fitness. Obviously that is neglecting dietary differences, so if you're fat from a high saturated fat diet then you are probably gonna be in worse health than someone fat through a high carb/unsaturated fat diet. But simply being fat isn't the killer. It's what state is your cardiovascular system is in that fucks you. Just something I read.

What a load of baloney. They tell you that 6 people out of every 1000 could be at risk of getting cancer through passive smoking. What they omit to tell you is that those 6 people would be at risk for

well as a ex smoker , been stopped 22 years . i was getting bit out of breath going up hills , no prob walking flat etc. for 2-3 hours , just the hill getting out of breath . went to the doctor do

I used to smoke 40 tailored a day stopped when the kids where born I don't for one minute think smoking should be banned if we take the stance that every activity that causes a drain on the nhs is ban

I think a licensing system would work for vices.....smoking, drinking, high adrenalin sports, crack, whores, crack-whores, eating pure f***ing shite, walking big tough dogs in public spaces & any more than 3 wanks a day........with the licence you pay an insurance premium, that should cover the inevitable consequences of having such a vice.....

Just a thought.....

Good job they don't put a tax on sex................ I'd be due a rebate !

My biggest bugbear is government health warnings being issued by governments who make a fortune out of such vices as tobacco and alcohol. They haven't got the nuts to take one side or the other- drop the taxes and leave smokers alone or ban tobacco completely !

Always smoked always will that was my attitude until recently . one side of neck looked swelled all the time , I just kept telling myself "be OK its what happens when you get older " . couple month back went to gp he referred me to ent (ear nose throat) . I thought that's it my numbers up , spend a few miserable years in/out hospital then croak . eventually after scans , ultrasound and biopsy they still could nt tell me if I had cancer or not . the consultant says whatever it is let's get it out and then we will know . I had two separate stays on ent ward and everyone in the ward each time had throat cancer , most not pension age . I thought what a twat , why on earth would anyone be stupid enough to smoke . I'm sure all the blokes on the ward felt the same because nobody ever wanted to nip out for a crafty fag .. I was told they was going to go in with a small hole get lump out and drain it . when I looked under the dressing I thought they tried to take my head off lol. 30 odd metal clips around my Gregory. They got a lump out the size of a orange.from my throat , saliva glands and up to my ear . that was 30th DEC and got to see consultant next wed for histology reports . fortunately my gp has see the results and confirmed no cancer , just a lipoma (fatty deposit). To close for comfort for this man .. No more Bensons ... Forget the politics of it , when you get that close to the consequences you realise .....

I smoke and enjoy smoking, no matter the consequences. I doubt that I will ever give up, and if it kills me then so be it. I have to die sometime so a few years difference here or there makes no odds. I can honestly say "I do wish I had never started" but I did, so have to live with the outcome.

You all sound as if you are desperate to live as long as you can, old age is no bed or roses I can assure you. Your body is not designed to live that long and it starts breaking down. Organs do not work as they should because they are well past their sell by date. Your mind deteriorates to a point that you cannot remember what you just said. That is not life, that is an experiment on how long the doctors can keep your failing body going.

Just after my 15th birthday I fell under a train, and I honestly thought I was going to die. There was no panic, just a calm acceptance that my life was over. Obviously I lived, but that does not alter the fact that at that moment when I was tumbling between the wheels of the trucks I thought I was going to die. Perhaps that experience has shaped the way I think as I now know that death is nothing to be frightened of and for sure it will come to us all at some point.

It's not about living forever tc, it's about having a healthy body and mind to be able to enjoy life for as long as possible. Smoking/obesity might only knock a couple years off your life but it'll knock a lot of life out of the years. Everybody has the right to do whatever they like but it's not like people such as myself want to live forever. Bad genetics will kill you before a poor lifestyle will, but a healthy lifestyle will enable you to make the most of what you are blessed with.

I'm not an angel either. Just the way I see it.

truther if i eat a burger it dosnst kill you but you smoking in the right place can kill me, what does get me is you smokers never admit its bad but dress it up as a fooking good thing with no penaltys.

I dont get that Tc........what would those other 6 people be at risk from ?......if its not something specific ( like passive smoking ) then its a bit of a silly statement to just say "something else " wouldnt you agree ?.......or have i read that wrong.

Gnash recent findings have shown that about one in ten people are genetically predisposed to getting cancer without any carcinogenic stimulants. If however some of those people had been exposed to stimulants such as passive smoking then the passive smoking will get the blame for them having cancer, not their genetic predisposition.

Hope that clears it up for you.

Very well put.......near death experiences simply teach you that its better to be alive than dead nobody can lie about it thats why its called survival instinct.........to then have this acceptance of death and almost disregard for quality of life makes me quite angry to be honest.

I take it you have never been in a situation where you are totally out of control of what happens to you? Just a guess I may be wrong? When you are in that situation and you have no control, survival instinct does not come into it. What could I a 15 year old child being tumbled around under railway trucks do to change the situation I was in, in order to survive?

You remind me of Dylan Thomas,

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

in simple terms , the reason i stopped smoking 22 years ago , was not because I couldn't afford it, or what other people thought of my smoking habit , as l liked a smoke after a meal, or when out having few pints I thought it was great  . but the reason I stopped for, was pissed off of coughing my fookin guts out every morning and if went down with cold was really bad after from the smoking . so now apart from a fooked back/shoulder./knee/  Iam ok , but these things are just wear/tear from heavy work 40 years, plus fookin falling down in the dark with funny past time called lamping the last 30 years lol , my last fall landed on my head and the wife thinks I not been right since she prob right
