Wanting To Get Into Ferreting

Hello, firstly my name is Rhys and I'm 29 living in Brixham, Devon. I have been interested in going ferreting for some time but due to previous work commitments I didn't have the time. Now I have a new job and am settled at home I have all the time in the world to give.

I am after some advice and guidance on how to start and what to get and also where in my area is good to go?.

If there is anyone local to me or in the devon area I would love to come out and be a tag along just to learn the ropes to get me started?

I have read a few interesting articles about what you actually need to start out and just wanted anyone else's input? Basically what I've read is that I need a couple of ferrets and half a dozen purse nets and a shovel, is this good for a beginner?

You need to get around some landowners and get some permissions mate. There are plenty of letters and forms about to gain them. A ferret finder is a handy tool aswell. I'm a novice myself so I can only say what I got before I felt comfortable to go out on my own. Couple of ferrets, book or research on care they are easy to look after but I'd rather have one in top nick than not, got about 40 purse nets from ebay about 35 quid spent. Hutch, run, ferret box, game bag (already had as I shoot) shovel,decent knife (mora clipper are cheap and good) working gloves and a decent hard wearing waterproof jacket. Ppl on here will give you some sound advice and I'm sure you'll get a few trips out with someone local to you. Most of all you'll need patience if your ferrets are young don't be expecting the numbers you see the guys pulling in on here, it will happen in time. Read up and enjoy I'm just starting to catch with mine now and have been out with one of the guys off here a few times and it really helped.

I'm not sure if ferretting has changed much since I used to go, but if you dont get a ferret finder, you'll need a ball of string too. You'll also need more than 6 nets and a spade, not a shovel.

Cheers guys,really appreciate all the advice. Really looking forward to getting all set up. What do you feed your ferrets because I've seen a few people feed rabbits in the hutch?

My ferrets get mainly rabbit through the ferreting season and part way through the summer then pigeons squirrels corvids and the odd rabbit anything I can knock over with my air rifle realy. If you don't shoot then you could use dry food during the summer.
