Who Doesn't Wear The Poppy!?!

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to hijack the mans thread, so I'll start another and more to the point, who doesn't wear a poppy and why ? :hmm:

I was angered the other day when Charlene White, an ITV news reader came out with her reasoning for not wearing one, I think her reasoning was nonsense, but you decide for yourselves

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/a606226/itv-news-presenter-charlene-white-reveals-why-she-wont-wear-a-poppy.html#~oUaAHyrl5oqkML

I think the fact that she drew attention to the racist and sexist remarks that were aimed at her last year, she won't be wearing one again this year - attention seeking if you ask me - not that racist or sexist slander are acceptable. .

I wear it whenever I am in public eye and I don't see the poppy as a symbol of charity, I see it as a symbol of respect. Respect for the lives of those who fought, lived and died, without the likes of whom we would not have life as we know it, if at all.

Lest we Never, Ever forget.

Correct. It is a symbol of respect for the great sacrifices made by so many.

It is NOT so yet another person can feel offended by something. Maybe if those sacrifices hadn't been made, she wouldn't be able to voice her stupid opinions.

Charlene White - for once this isn't about YOU. Get over yourself.

Right, well I was one of the few that said I don't wear a poppy so I guess I should justify that...

It's pretty simple really, wearing badges and the likes pisses me off, so other than for a specific occasion I'd not wear one. I remember the dead and living that served for our country and freedom, I respect them in my own ways. I always make my donation, I read and learn about the battles and history and I have my moment of silence and remembrance.

Even now on my work PC desktop I have the background of a memorial of the 'Commando Winners of the VC'.... I just choose not to wear a poppy daily.

If I see one of those wristbands about though I'd certainly wear one of those daily.

I don't and the reason is that I sort of do it out of respect for my old dad who resolutely refused to ware one.

He was part of the BEF and spent 5 years in Stalag 8b, he used to tell the poor poppy man to f**k off !!!........they didn't give a f**k about us and it's not going to bring my mates back was what he said.

So, that's why I don't

Its been politicised ever since that poppy burning incident a few years back and that banner that a few idiots unfurled at a Celtic game. The wearing of a poppy has become a symbol rather than being the simple means of raising money for veterans it was originally intended as. People using it/not wearing it to make a statement need a good shake. Wear it, dont wear it just dont use it to make it symbol for your views..

Agree with that mate, If something's personal then don't make a song and dance about to everyone you meet.

I've no idea who Charlene White is so not sure where this has all come from, or whether she is seeking attention, however, I've got absolutely no issue for her reasoning for not wearing a poppy on air...and can't understand why anyone would be offended by her decision not to;

"I have decided once again not to wear a poppy on screen. It was not an easy decision in light of the racist and sexist abuse that I received on social media last year. It is a subject that provokes a lot of debate and anger - but it is one that I feel strongly about. I support and am patron of a number of charities, and due to impartiality rules, I am not allowed to visually support them all whilst presenting news programmes. That includes things like a red ribbon for World Aids Day, or a purple band for Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Both these and many more charities do great things in the UK, but I'm not allowed to give them exposure on screen.

So I feel uncomfortable supporting just one charity above all others, namely The Royal British Legion, but I fully support my colleagues who do choose to wear the poppy on screen.

In my private life, it's very different. I wear a poppy on Armistice Day, in fact I wear one that my friend's mum knitted for me a few years ago. And I've also bought one of those incredible ceramic poppies which can currently be seen at the Tower Of London. And every year I donate to the British Legion. Money which the charity desperately needs for the work that they do to support serving and ex-service men and women and their families. So please don't think that I don't support the work that our service personnel do, or that I don't understand the sacrifices made by servicemen and women 100 years ago. I do. I come from a Forces family. My Dad served in the RAF, and my uncle served in the Army. I spoke to them both six years ago when I first decided not to wear a poppy, and they both support my decision.

But I don't expect everyone to support it. However it is always important to remember what my family, your family, and millions of people over many generations have fought for: the right to choose, and the right of freedom of speech and expression."

Saturday 27th an armed man attempted entry to a synagogue outside of San Diego, California. According to eyewitnesses he was armed with an "AR style assault rifle" and 3 people have been injured and one has been confirmed dead.
AR15's are illegal in California. The shooter was engaged by the synagogue's armed security which in this case was an off duty border patrol agent. The shooter fled the scene and gave himself up to LE.
The narrative of this story began as one of gun control but has quickly shifted to that of a hate crime now that more details have come to light. The article is from CNN but pretty factual with what's known at this time. The shooter has broken numerous laws and the bad guy with the gun was stopped by a good guy with a gun.

It's official. American socialist icon Bernie Sanders has officially declared that he's running for commander in chief in 2020. He's raised around $5.9 million from more than 220,000 donors in the first 24 hours, which has trumped even the Donald at this point. Many of those donors are set up for recurring donations that are set to net $600,000 a month.
Last time around there were allegations of hamstringing as despite Bernie's popularity with the American electorate as he conceded to Hillary Clinton despiting winning many of the primaries by a large margin. Looking at Hillary's disasterous performance in 2016 it'll be interesting to see whether Sanders remains an independent candidate or goes full Democrat as the group whittles itself down to a frontrunner.
