Chocolatis lethal to dogs and cats. The cocoa in chocolate contains a chemical called Theobromine this is toxic. Chocolate can poison a dog. It can cause many problems and even lead to cardiac arrest. Dark chocolate carries the highest risk.

I know a few old boys who carry a mars bar in the pocket when lamping in case the dog needs it.

The mars bar was always an old trick used by beaters while shooting and the reason they'd try and get an extra bit out of their dog was because they were paid to do a job and you can't go home early.

But in the lamping field you go home when you want and a tired dog is time to go home. Knowing when to quit IMO is a sign of a good dog man. Going over board with work on a game lurcher is a novice mistake IMO.

There's also a school of thought that chocolate is bad for dogs.

Electrolytes are an aid to replacing some of the minerals a dog has used up after hard work. Hard work, not being abused.

Some dogs let you know when they have had enough, but some that are mad for the game, can be very hard to gage.

 

These dogs can burn more calories than what's in the tank.

 

Just like us (well some of us lol) work to hard/burn to many calories and you can get the wobbles, sugar/glucose can stop this until you can get sufficient calories back in the tank.

 

So a very small Mars bar was kept in the pocket just incase this happened.

try telling that to my old dog, he was the best behaved dog ever...... Except around chocolate he once polished off a kilo and a half of Cadbury's finest In one sitting and still lived to 14-15. Caught the tw@t with chocolate all over his white face like a naughty schoolboy RIP Coops

Some, not all, tolerate choclate more than others. it could of gone either way, he was a lucky dog.

Majority of dogs will get poisoned by it.

I know it was an accident what happned to your dog, but for those reading and dont know, be very carefull.

We had a bitch that would sniff out a bit of chocolate anywhere, one Christmas she eat all the kids chocolate stockings and all the other chocolate that was out about £45 worth, didn't do her any harm, but the stuff with high cocoa content maybe would of had a different outcome.
