Dew Claw Removal As Pups

i commented on a previous post about a dog injuring a dew claw and it led me to ask this......

why dont more folk who breed, remove dew claws as day old pups ? no more trauma at that age than docking a terrier. i can appreciate people might not want to do this but surely with a working lurcher they are just a hinderence and another chance of getting a dog knocked up

any thoughts ?

Got pup here with them on and yes its a hindrence,, god noes why people dont do them quick snip no pain job done..

done at 2 to 3 days old its as simple as cutting your nails, always had mine done as it saves any problems later,

My 2 have them on never had bother with them only small dogs and dont do 40 mph lol

I take them off on day 3...had loads cause problems over the years.

What price do vets charge? Mate bred his Russell in summer and cost him £25 a pup!!!(for docking) Maybe there is the answer? ££££££

Mine aint got hers removed and is 9 month old . is it to late to get them done . . What would it cost ..

i also take them off at three days using a sharp pair of side cutters in tight to the leg you need to get the root off at the base or they can grow back nine months way to old to get them done as the bone is hardened

yeah a nine month old dog its an operation. a day old pup or so they can even be nipped off with fingernails

i have lurchers in the past where they haven't been done right and later on they have caused more trouble with catching them on stuff i have never liked them on running dogs for that reason the litter i have bred is my 1st as most of you know i didn't want the dew claws on so i took them off like paul said simple as clipping a nail so why not just take them off saves the agro later on

no, but get it done now , the longer you leave it more of a bigger op for the dog, and the more vet will charge you .
