I would say definately not to a starter having a goss , get a Harris or Redtail but I would never let a goss go to a new starter. They are so easy to mess up and are for experienced falconers only.

I would definitely say a gos should go to someone with atleast a few years of experience under their belt, as they are very shy temperamental birds and you have to have a lot of patience with these birds. As griffo has already said, the perfect bird for a beginner is a harris or redtail.

I'd say if you want to fly a Goss and have the time then get one as a first bird but make sure you've done your homework. No point starting with a harris or redtail if it's a good you want to fly. A Harris won't make you aware of some of the mistakes that can be made and can be flown and hunted fairly easy whereas a goss you will need to do everything 100% correct and you cannot be lazy with them and they won't be so forgiving.

You don't learn to drive in a formula one car as they can have lots of problems caused by the operator. Harrises and Redtails are like a ford fiesta which you learn in. It's not impossible but to many wankers with big egos have lost or killed their gosses through bad weight management or lack of experience.

I agree that people should fly whatever bird they choose first bird or not, but and theres always a but, you would nbeeed at least imho a few seasons out with a goshawk learning its management from the bottom up, better to get the bird you want than learn with a harris and pass it on, they live a long time do harris how many owners could that be? bit unfair innit?

They do live along time and if you mess a goss up it will stay like that for it's life ( unflyable or serious bad habits) but with a Harris the are majorly more forgiving to mistakes caused by the inexperience of the handlers. If you are going to get a Gos as your first bird go out with someone with gosses and like said above spend a few seasons doing the hours hard work and getting your set up right before getting a bird.
