Man O War Dog Show And Raceday Sunday 6Th July 14

Man O War Dog Show and Race Day Saturday 21st July 18

With the jingling of the alarm clock loud and clear in our ears, and the Dog chorus howling from the dog pens, our canine companions had issued a  reminder that the day had arrived for the Man O War Dog Show and Race day, at Castleblaney Road, Keady.

As we drove  through Keady,  on our left han side, beautiful Clea Lake came into view. A tributary of the river Callan, Clea lake ripples radiantly, and runs parallel with winding country roads through South Armagh. Onward bound, our scenic drive guided us through this stunning part of Northern Ireland, and to the venue for a superb Dog Show and family day out.

There was a very large crowd in attendance at this now very popular show. The show rings were well situated, with a brilliant mix of Lurcher,Terriers ,Whippets and Pups on the day . The racecourse was in mint condition, and what an up hill  gallop that was. A great challenge for any good racing dog, and no doubt we were not disappointed.

As usual the whole show from start to finish was run with impeccable organisation, commencing with the racing first.

It was nice to see so many children in the childrens handling class. As I have said before, these young people are our show organisers of tomorrow, so it is heart warming to see them starting early in Country Sports, and following in our footsteps. Some tired little people on Sunday night.

No matter how many times I go to these dog shows, I always meet some new friends. I probably speak to them on Face book or Hunting life several times, but never meet them face to face. It was a treat to shake the hand of some of these people on Sunday, Lurchers Meath, Brian Welsh (senior) and Lisa Beggs. What lovely people to have a conversation with. I really enjoyed meeting you all. The craic, the banter and above all, your friendship

The weather was good for most of the day with the exception of a few heavy showers in the evening. A Chip Van and Ice Cream van was on site. The racing commenced at approximately 1.00 pm, followed by the showing immediately afterwards. ( Full set of Results will be up shortly )

In between the raffle took place and it generated some great excitement as usual. Some lovely prizes, and some great laughs into the bargain.

And Finally may I take this opportunity to thank the Judges Seamie Donnelly /Terriers, and Brian Welsh (Junior) /Lurchers and Whippets. A very difficult job, but well done by both men. A big thank you to Plunkett Rafferty and his wife for the show venue. Without you the show could not of taken place. Too lovely people. Billy Harpur was there with his camera clicking away all day. Hopefully we will see these photographs up on the forums shortly.

Finally, Finally, do you know I felt a sense of pride for these too young women on Sunday. Together with their brilliant band of helpers, Charlene and Michelle Rafferty, you produced a very enjoyable show and race day to be proud of. Your show was well organised, and evident a lot of hard work was carried out behind the scenes to make this day possible, and so successful.

One young lad Shane Cartmill was Charlenes little helper on Sunday. Shane you are a credit to your parents, and with your helping hands, you made life a little easier for theses too young women.

Lets not forget, this show was run for the Charity Suicide Awareness, a charity very close to all our hearts, and always standing in the wings to reach out to everyone in their hour of need. What a gift and what a contribution to society. Nobody knows when tragedy will knock on our doors.

But remember, you the good Canine folk and sponsors, it was your generosity and kindness that made all of this happen and the day so successful.

Charlene and Michelle, you run a top class show on Sunday, and many thanks for a really enjoyable day out, amongst all our lovely Canine friends. Look forward to more of the same next year.

Abbeyleix  Lurcher, Terrier, Whippet and Hound Dog Show and Race Day . Sunday 14thApril 19
The quiet midland town of Abbeyleix came alive on Sunday morning 14thApril 19 with the echoes of barking dogs, as the Canine men and women from north and south of the border filled the field, for another days showing and racing at the now annual Abbeyleix Dog Show and Race day.
The weather was not kind to us on the day, with continuous heavy rain and cold winds for most of the day.
We arrived in the field around 10.00am, with a trouble free journey down to Abeyleix. Walking around the field I could see the rain was not going to dampen the spirits of our great huntsmen and women. It was evident after the long winter in the field, the time had come to allow their Canine friends a day out and to show off the other side of their talents in the show ring.
The rings were well spaced out, with a brilliant race track , some lovely rosettes and trophies and loads of dog meal for our winning pooches.
Families and children were out in force, with all the fun of the fair for the wee people. There was a bouncy castle, chip van, ice cream van, and stalls with plenty of hunting gear, dog leads, and every thing for all aspects of Country Sports and Country Life.
Time passes so quickly, and very soon it was time for showing and racing.

And Finally, on behalf of Brian and Charmaine, a big thank you to the judges for job well done. A very special word of thanks to a very talented photographer Jim Mulcahey, the other half of these two brilliant photographers, for the lovely photographs. We wish Jims wife Ann Marie a speedy recovery and hope to see you around the  ring again with your camera very soon.
And Finally, Finally, despite the terrible weather at Sundays show, Brian and Charmaine Grady and team, you produced a brilliant top class show, and sent some happy campers and their canine friends  home with pride in their hearts, dog food, and an armful of trophies.
It was evident a lot of sleepless nights and hard work went into getting this show together, but Brian and Charmaine you pulled it off 100%.
Thank you for your friendship on Sunday, and I look forward to going back to Abbeyleix in 2020 for more of the same

Avondhu Foxhounds Dog Show Sunday 31stMarch 19
What a fantastic turnout at the GAIN sponsored Avondhu Foxhounds Show held at the Event Center ,Corrin ,Fermoy, Co Cork   Sunday 31st March 19.
The weather was kind this year and despite it being Mother’s Day, there was a big turnout of families and wee people.
There was a good mix of dogs on the day, with Hounds/Lurchers/ Whippets /Terriers/Gun Dogs and Pets in abundance. The quality of Dogs in the rings was second to none and a credit to their owners.
After the long cold winter work in the field, it was a treat for them to show off their talents in the show ring.  After a chat and a yearly get together with good friends, very soon it was show time.
Here are the Showing Results :
      Champion Lurcher :
      Phil Owens with Eva  :
      Qualified for Five Nations
      Champion Terrier   :
Eamo Mc Earlain with Sprigy : Qualified for Five Nations
      Champion Whippet :
      Mark Delaney with Junior :
      Qualified for Five Nations
      Champion Hound    :
      Kevin Casey with Torton
       Champion Gun Dog :
      Alanna Flynn with Blaze
      Overall Show Champion :
      Eamo Mc Earlain with Sprigy
A Big Congratulations to Eamo and all above winners.
And Finally, The Avondhu Foxhounds Show members would like to thank the Judges on the day for a job well done.
      Jim Dalton    -    Whippets,
      Niall Healy     -    Lurchers,
      John Sweeney-   Hounds.
      Maurice Keane - Terriers.
Barry O Connell - Gun Dogs.
      Stacey O Dwyer - Pets.
It was a bitter sweet event this year, as a true advocate of field work Noel Lambe who walked the fields and hedges each week with myself sadly passed away unexpectedly late last year. Noel was a very popular man in the Hound community and this was very evident with the huge turnout at his funeral. Noels family are well known in the area, and up to a couple of years ago had the oldest pack of Foot Beagles in the country.
At our show today it was a very poignant and sad moment, tainted with a little pride as I Sean O Keeffe stood beside Noels daughter Ailish, as she presented the Noel Lambe Perpetual Cup in Noels memory, to Kevin Casey from the Galtee Foxhounds for Best Overall Hound.
Noel my friend you will never be forgotten in the Hound world and may you rest in peace.
The show was a great success and this is only attributable to the people who attended it. A big thank you to one and all for your support.
Finally, Finally, I would like to thank all the Avondhu Hunt members involved who gave up their time and effort to help make this day a roaring success. I look forward to seeing you all again for more of the same in 2020.
