I started off fishing for perch on the local canal, pretty much sea gear and worms, eventually it progressed to bream, tench etc.....

But I still have a soft spot for perch, I heard the odd decent one was coming out of a local still water, it's mainly fished for carp, only a small place but holds some decent roach too...

I took the kids for a few hours and set up a waggler rod had a plumb around and found a deeper hole a out 7m out, also fed a line beside some rushes..

Fed caster and fished single maggot over the top ( had no worm), we caught a few roach to around 12oz, in the deeper spot, after an hour I tried the reed swim and had a perch of around 6oz... Kept feeding this spot, next put in there and hooked a better fish, it was a perch around 1lb... then I had another around the same size from the deeper hole..

The old boy who runs the pond came for a yap ( he's chewed my ear on this place for 15 or more years and likes it now I take the kids etc, although he questions my sanity the amount they talk lol)...

He said a perch over 2lb had came out the week before.

I walked the canal with the dogs today and saw a bloke fishing for perch, I quite fancy a go at a biggie out if the canal, so might give it a go for something different.

Any way we had around 15 roach and 4 perch it whiled away a couple of hours and got me thinking about perch again.

Not targeted them for year Hot Meat,

Been reading a lot in the angling press recently about fishing for big perch, I fancy a crack at them,

I'm used to lugging a load of match gear down the canal/river might go with a little less gear worms and a few spinners and see how it goes.

Have you had many decent ones mate?

No nowt to write home about lol had a brace of 3lbers on popped up worm in two casts once lol that'll always stick with me. There is a race course near me that has a large pond in middle, I used to ferret for them and one day seen a few decent perch sat in at side so I grabbed a light spinning set up and tried it. Owner come an said no fish in there just as I hooked a little perch lol I fished it for few years and got fair few 3lbers but most were smaller. Since then they have put carp in and now it's a syndicate water and nobody bothers the perch

Other than that the canal we grew up fishing produced loads a small uns, but we never got any big uns as kids, probs down to pike or us doing if wrong lol

Nowadays tho if we are out carping then we usually have a light rod out fishing maggots if chopped worm for wee perch to stop kids getting bored lol

Some cracking size perch there lads,

Pk that's a beast...

I've caught a few better ones to around 3lb over the years, but purely by luck.. A by catch I suppose....

The better ones I've caught have been river fish, and I did watch a bloke land a real decent one on the town stretch near me, I would've said that one was plus 3lb..

We used to catch minnows then use them as live bait Kev ,perch love em. The biggest I have ever caught though I had on paste made from green swimstim fishing a match on a carp puddle. I think catching perch takes you back to your early years of fishing.Everybody loves a stripe.

It definitely does Bry, my lads caught more species in his first year or 2 than I did in my first 10 lol...

I remember catching my first carp in a tiny farm pond, I couldn't believe it lol... I go out of my way to avoid them now lol

Ps.. Just used up the couple of cabs I had over whilst I waited for fin to finish marine cadets...

Fished Exmouth and had a little flounder, another of the fish we used to catch as kids lol

try the dink dink method with read maggot and a dead red on the hook, fished close to an island, commercial carp waters hold some very large perch, also dead baiting at dusk and dawn can attract the bigger specimens .remember they are an ambush specialist so think features when looking for areas to try.
