The Great Game Fairs of Ireland are Ireland's premier game and country fairs. They are organised in the beautiful traditional venues of Shanes Castle and Birr Castle, and new on the block this year Ballynahinch. The Game Fairs of Ireland have wide and varied programmes that appeal to anyone who lives, works or plays in the countryside and a supeb range of international class competitions with a top prize fund.

Bad time of year for hunting folk in September hunting season in full flow just my opinion

Graham, One of the most successful Game Fairs in the UK is the Midland - in September.

 

It is a good time for end of season bargains from retailers, good time to purchase last minute items for the shooting season etc. This year the event will be mainly indoor because the estate had let some of the ground we would use in future events but we still wanted to have a Terrier, Lurcher & Whippet presence so this will be a Terrier, Lurcher and Whippet WINNERS event in the main outdoor arena - i.e Lurcher of the Year, Terrier of the Year, Whippet of the Year and Pup of the Year to be judged from champions qualifying from any show in Ireland. Owners of dogs qualifying as champions at other events will pay a competition entry fee of £10 ( going to the organising club) and they will receive two tickets ( worth £30) to what will be a rather unique and stylish country sports event. There will be an excellent prize fund for the event with all competitors receiving a prize.

 

A similar winners competition is being organised for gundogs..

 

It is envisaged that a wider range of events will be available in 2015.

There is the Irish Game and Country Fair, Birr Castle, Co Offaly 23rd & 24th August Racing Saturday and show Sunday.

 

We have The Five Nations Terrier & Lurcher Finals after the show. Champions at qualifying shows can compete for great prizes in these competitions and have a final chance to qualify at the show on the Sunday before the finals.

I have been doing these for coming 36 years and 53 fairs - so they are very much part of my way of life. I do enjoy organising them probably because they are more of a hobby than a job and while they need to make a profit to survive I don't need to make my livelihood from them. A very big plus for me is the fact that I have met and worked with so many wonderful fellow country sports men and women during my time organising them.

 

We have won many awards and had lots of compliments but the one that meant most to me was a father who in our survey said " When a child says to his father 'Dad thank you for giving me the most wonderful day of my life' you must be doing something right".

 

Hopefully if my good health continues I should have a few more years 'at the helm' but we have a good young team coming up behind us.
