im taking mine out now at 9 month just getting it watching the lamp and giving it the odd run on rabbits seem to be doing well on it

I took my whippet greyhound out at 7 months just me and him it was windy dark, he ran the rabbits once he saw them moving. Took him ferreting a few times and let him get used to the nets.

ive had my pup out a few times but he,s not mentally ready he,s around 14 months

just very immature at the minute, he marks setts and holds rabbits in the nets im

just going to let him have a few runs every time we go out until I think he,s ready

to go out alone

There is no harm at all taking them out even at 5 -6 months old only as an observer taking in all the sights smells and sounds same with any dogs whether it gun dogs terriers etc

Take mine out soon as jabbed ,learn everything from being in motors to getting through gates ,mine normally have first rabbit by 6 months ,then its just not give them too much too soon

I agree with a lot of what is said. . . . but i've never really got the point of letting pups watch other dogs run. . . if bunnys are your game. When old enough and fit enough, if its bred right and its got it in it. . . . it wont matter if its seem another dog run a bunny or not. . . . it will chase it! Obviously I totally agree with all of the other stuff, teaching them gates, cars, ditches, stock, being in the dark, the rain, the lamp etc.

 

But they aint people. . . .

I can't say I would want to drag a just jabbed puppy out lamping sounds a pain on the arse. I don't believe it benefits a pup much, if at all. Not ideal for a young developing pup physically either. Yeah maybe tagging along for a quick 15 minutes look see around 6 months, but even then they just get frustrated watching other dogs run. I want mine to work free of a slip and be steady not be a whining pulling steam train. I do some training at night, with the pup solo as for gates cars ditches etc they learn that daytime. But hey call me old fashioned lol each to there own.

I'm with Sirius on this. I cant see any point in taking a pup with you lamping just to watch, I think it'll just frustrate the little fella (and you for that fact as well).

 

Going back to the original question, you've got to make sure the pup/young dog is mentally and physically ready and only the owner knows when this. If your not sure, then ask someone who does.

 

And I'm a big believer in "little and often", 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there......1 or 2 runs only. And if you do catch, end on high and go home, and don't think "just one more".

to my mind lots of sense here so far, have them out daily, lots of wee training sessions, lots of socialisation etc and a wee bit of patience, they'll be ready when they're ready, if any doubt wait a wee while its not gonna hurt you'll just get more time for all the obedience, jumping, retrieving etc practise

Everybody has thier own ways ,and if it works for you crack on....i start them young as i think it makes to a steadier dog all round if it didnt work for me belive me i wouldnt do it , and if you put it in ur head that every time you go out with the pup your going to have to wait at gates ,and take that little bit longer doing things that the adult dog would do first time its not so bad ,its nice going out with a 9 month pup thats use to everything at night (motors ,gates ,fences ,had a few rabbits etc etc)than a 12 month old doing it all for the first time...Ive done it starting them later and the way i have now for a few years and i know which i prefer ,hey but thats just my view
