Does Keeping A Dog Indoors Make It "soft".

Recommended Posts

I was listening to a bunch of my mates(5 of them) argue about this the other day.

They all keep a mixture lf terriers/lurchers and one also has three spaniels. All in all about 12 dogs.

They were all giving different opinions. Each arguing their own corner and not really budging on the matter, the one that keeps two indoors and two outdoors said he didn't think there was any difference in working ability as dogs are born with it but said he'd have all four outdoors if he could start over. Anyway the debate went on for about an hour but came to no real conclusion.

What are your opinions guys?

It won't affect their working ability at all but they aren't half happy to see you in the morning if they sleep outside!. Kept indoors you've got to drag the buggers out the door for a morning walk! lol

Only trouble with a dog in a kennel is they can be 'forgotten about' and left for long periods with no interaction with anyone. When their in the house their always 'in your face' so don't miss out as much.

Ive had them in the house and in kennels had three terriers one black and two Black and Tan fell types in the house in Glasgow and then the same terriers in kennels at my present location so in my opinion it make no difference.

I find to keep them outside for first couple of years is best,it stops the family creating inconsistancy with the training commands, and in my opinion the dog learns its place in the pack,I do however make sure the dogs interact with all the family, but its usually when I am about, once the dog gets to two yr old I start to bring them in a little at a time, and socialise them more into the family enviroment, and up to now it has served me well, the old man once said to me,

"A young dog kept in a house, is like a woman on hooked on chocolate, they end up fat and morngy,"

Thats open to interpretation but, keeping them outside certainly maintains the boundaries till the dog is mature enough, there's arguments for and against both methods,
