When Do Lines Become Your Own

Recommended Posts

When breeding terriers at which point does the line become your own. Alot if lines spoke about always seem to come from years ago. I would say if you bred a litter of pups yourself then those pups are from your own line. You are the one that chose the dog/bitch to be put to and know what you want from the pups. What are people's thoughts on this.

The interesting thing is the definition of 'line', yeh you could breed 3 generations of dogs, starting with your two, breed a bitch & 3 years later breed from her & so on...... But if your no

Well worded and clever insight Bosun11. We are only "polishing" what we inherited from the man before us........ that goes for the "big" names too. If working bred pups were not for sale I wonder woul

I think a few men have maybe sacrificed working ability to get uniformed and even looking dogs over the years just so could get a "line" of their own ! Myself I don't care if they're a bit of a scatt

Good question, it should take many years and many generations to accurately describe creating a line, at some point you have to decide when to breed back to related stock etc pups produced should be proven before breeding from them, realistically a minimum of 3 years (although many don't) blah blah blah unless you have a lot of stock on the go, it's gonna take many years & many tried & tested dogs, unless you start inbreeding first generation etc etc I think a lot of guys claim there own lines prematurely.

We started something many years back combining to famous lines, dogs were produced & proven but the whole thing imploded prematurely due to circumstances, maybe if it had carried on all these years later we could of claimed it as our own but not much before.......

I'm sure different men have different views on when a line becomes their own. For me it's all about consistently producing workers from a family of dogs over several generations . If the dogs ain't producing a real good percentage of workers then it's not worth calling them " your own line" ?

But if your not sourcing dogs that are in some way related to your original stock when lining said birches, in 3 generations I don't think you've created anything.....your just breeding terriers.

It would be interesting to hear peoples definition of 'a line' ATB

I can trace the line of my dog back many, many generations back to the original breeder.

Seriously though, difficult question. Would have been easier "back in the day" when there wasn't the clamour for the "famous names". Tthe shows in the 70s were partly (and probably unaware that they were) reponsible at the beginning but the internet has took over in the last decade or so.

Everybody wants the best terrier, be it a "branded" one or one off decent parents that you know without any fanfares.

Plummer did it and there are different lines from his original stock, the breed only having been "created" in the last few decades :hmm:

Good thread Obi :victory:

Lines are interesting things . . . . and maybe you get one when you come up with something new or different in some way. . . . or specialised.

Because you cant get one from just breeding a litter. Because I could go to my mate who has been breeding a line of terriers for say 20 years. . . . get a bitch pup. . . . stick one of his dogs over it after a few years. . . . . get a litter. . . . . and call it my line????? Not really!

A line has to have some consistency I guess . . . . . and maybe some uniqueness?
