Eye Injury In Lurcher

My eldest bitch has one eye, down to a black thorn, but it was many years before when she hit it, it gave her trouble since and she lost sight in it around February time, caused her no problems since and I think she is spotting things better, probably down to seeing good with one instead of the other being a nuisance.

You need some fucithalmic suspension from the vets. keep a check that the pupil is reacting to light, a low powered pocket torch is best to check (shine in eye and pupil should get smaller) the eye essencially goes in to shock and the pupil stops adjusting which controls the amount of light that hits the iris. Best bet is to have a uv dye check done at the vets

Best get it to a vet pal, had something similar happen to one of my terriers 3 of them set about a hedgehog and the pup ended up with a quill stuck plum center of his eye, done the same as you removed it and washed his eye out looked ok to me in the morning, but the wife being such a dog lover she decided to take him to the vet, thank f__k she did cause the vet said if we would have it much longer he could have lost the eye, but he said he would try a minor op on the eyeball as it is made up of layers like an onion he would remove some layers, to remove the infected area, was not that expensive and worked a treat he's now 12 and still going strong, just my experience, atb and good luck

Similar thing happened to one of mine, took her to vets they removed the thorn but it had punctured the fluid at the back of the eye, vet said if left it would dry up, she cut a layer of skin from the lower eye lid and pulled it over the puncture and stitched it to the eye ball to try and seal the puncture, 4 weeks later the dogs back to normal with very slight scar tissue and no sign of sight loss, top job by the vet

Well just back from vet , eye got flushed wi a dye an vet thinks its luckily not punctured the eyeball but scratched the eye then embedded in the inside of the eyelid...got a painkilling injection an now has loxicom for painkiller and fucithalmic eye drops..due back on friday for a follow up appointment..so fingers crossed...cheers to all who replied..gravedigger

You can't feck about with Pork pies. Time is of the essence that's for sure. My dog had a large thorn in his eye while working cover. I had the dog to the vet within a few hours as i could see the thorn and the dog was not opening the eye voluntarily. so they operated removing the thorn (which kept breaking up) re inflated the eye ball with air and stitched the eye ball up (amazing suture work) this without doubt saved the eye! There is a pic of the stitched eye in Skycats book.

Well its back to the vet tomorrow , dog is opening his eye now though it looks kinda cloudy but not leaking any puss or similar stuff ,think the painkillers have left him a bit doped up...hes not his usual alert self think its a mix of medication an bein sore...so fingers crossed for tomorrow cant wait to get him out an about again...thanks again to all who took time to offer advice, appreciate it..cheers, gravedigger

a cloudy blue colour is a sure sign of infection but it is easily treated

Thats exactly the way it looks paulus...so hoping between the painkillers an the eye drops it clears up without too much problems or pain for the dog...the vet hes seeing tomorrow morning specialises in optical damage/problems (recommended by a vet in the same practise) so fingers crossed everything goes smoothly....hate seeing the dog in discomfort...although he was quick enough to get in amongst the tuna laced with painkillers !!!
