Helston - Cornwall

Recommended Posts

i break up this friday for 2 weeks, me and the gang are heading down and staying at a campsite just outside Helston.

i'm after a few tips from anyone with a bit of knowledge of the area, we've done a fair bit of travelling in cornwall over the years and have visited most of the big stuff, lands end, lost gardens, eden, etc.. what i'm after is advice on some stuff that perhaps you dont get a leaflet for.

things i like....

decent pubs

dog friendly beaches

good fishing marks (rocks or harbours), not the most skilled at sea fishing but can get by..

decent skippers for a day out on a boat fishing

decent walks for the mutts, coast, woods....

good farm shops / butchers

any other intresting stuff...

any info would be great

cheers

I've not been since ten year ago,but mullions nice little place, think the cove is rated as a fishing spot.

Forgot to add if you are staying in Helston, looe bar is definitely worth a visit for fishing.

There is a bungalow at the bottom of helston where the old guy sells his own veg. its near the lake. There is also a farmers market down there in the hall but you would have to check for the dates it is on. You can park down at the bottom[free] and get onto a path which takes you all the way to the coast, it takes about 11/2 hours either way to walk it. or you walk so far on the top then drop down and walk back along the stream.Cant help you with the fishing down there but if you fancy a trip up to the north coast i can show you some marks.

I've not been since ten year ago,but mullions nice little place, think the cove is rated as a fishing spot.

Both pubs are decent as well but Its high season so you will be squashed in LOL

Cape Cornwall good for rock fishing.

Decent fishing trips out of Penzance.

Plenty of dog friendly beaches, see Cornwall TIC website.

Like I said, its high season so expect everywhere to busy, expensive and oversubscribed.

Have a nice time LOL

Cheers, D.

PS Robbo, where are you to?

PM if preferred.

I was fishing the rocks below the Minnack Theatre once and had a basking shark swimming right infring of me awesome sight,

That is a cracking beach there, porth curnow it's called, very deep shelf though beware with kids..

If your more of a take it easy type angler the pier at Penzance is easy fishing for mackerel, gars etc also the pier in Mevagissey ( used to love that place)

I would take Robbo up on his offer mate, he knows his stuff around the north coast marks and there's a chance he'll put you on bass,

My favourite beaches though are in the north coast, watergate, Harlyn bay, consatine, get some wet suits and body boards and get in mate great fun, or hire a kayak for a couple of hours and ride the surf in that.

The attractions will be packed get on the beaches mate..

Have a good time..

I want to purchase a pair of boots for the colder weather, I do a lot of walking, and some trekking about the hillsides and trails. I do not want "winter boots" but rather boots that would be suitable for a cold day, but would work with layers of socks rather than thick heavy boots. Several people have told me Meindl is an excellent brand, and that is great, but what kind ? Hiking ? Walking ? Do they make them that they would serve the purpose mentioned above ? Any specifics to look for in a boot for this purpose ?
      Thank you in advance,
      Lynn

Sorry gentlemen to bother you, but I have come to my wits end. My neighbour across the way lets her dog roam as it please when it comes to shitting and urination, she is too lazy to actually take the dog out herself. He seems to have taken to my property and a certain area just under my bedroom window. I do not want to hurt the dog for the sake of her ignorance, but I do very much need to stop him from doing it any longer. The grass and  the shrubs are dying and turning brown and the flowers are just rank with smell that floats up through my bedroom window.
He is a VERY OVERWEIGHT beagle and leaves behind some damn good deposits.
I am wondering short of doing something stupid, what can I do to deter the dog from that area or any patches of garden I have? I plan to go to the council about the problem, and lay some of it on the town manager who is an acquaintance of mine, but in the meantime, any tricks out there to make my flowers and bushes unsavoury.
      Thank you in advance,
      Lynn

Saturday 27th an armed man attempted entry to a synagogue outside of San Diego, California. According to eyewitnesses he was armed with an "AR style assault rifle" and 3 people have been injured and one has been confirmed dead.
AR15's are illegal in California. The shooter was engaged by the synagogue's armed security which in this case was an off duty border patrol agent. The shooter fled the scene and gave himself up to LE.
The narrative of this story began as one of gun control but has quickly shifted to that of a hate crime now that more details have come to light. The article is from CNN but pretty factual with what's known at this time. The shooter has broken numerous laws and the bad guy with the gun was stopped by a good guy with a gun.
