Firearms Under 17

Recommended Posts

I am currently 17 years old and i often help out on a shooting estate near by. I go out lamping with the game keepers quite a lot and i was just wondering if anyone can tell me at what age i can get a rifle, use a rifle, when i can use one on my own and are there restrictions on calibers. I have asked about but no one can seem to give me the answers i'm looking for.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ian,

At 17 if you apply for a Firearms certificate, then you can't buy guns or ammunition, that'll have to wait until you're 18.

When you apply, you can ask for any calibre of firearm, providing you have "good reason" , there is no age limit on calibres. However, until you are 18, the gun would need to be given to you as you cannot buy or lend. The same applies to ammunition, it would need to be bought for you and given.

If you are given a gun and ammunition, providing you are on land you have permission, you can use that firearm unaccompanied, that is from the age of 14.

If you are out lamping with the keeper, as he is a servant of the owner of the land (in technical terms), you can use his rifle on that land even without an FAC, providing you comply with the terms of his certificate. That is from 17 and is known as the "Estate Condition".
