Standards Have Dropped

I am currently reading the book mentioned below. I had to smile when I read this particular page. It gives an insight into the standards upheld by folk in the early 20th Century (WWI era).

Quoted from the book by Robert Graves, "Goodbye to all that"

 

A major once said that "every so called sportsmen had at some time or another committed a sin against sportsmanship".

The sins that were anecdotally admitted to in the book were;

1.Shooting a grouse two days before the twelth as he was sailing the next day to join his battalion in India and it was his last chance.

2.Killed a sitting pheasant with a stone when he was old enough to know better

3. Gone out with a poacher and crumbled poison-berry into a trout stream ( the sin of fraternising with a poacher seemed to be the greater of the two sins!)

4. An army major/gentlrman farmer over run by foxes and the nearest hunt being nearly 30 miles away had permitted his bailiff to protect the hen roosts with a gun!

 

If these were the greatest sins that were commited today. What a wonderful place it would be.

Reccomend the book. Makes you realise what a bunch of cowards we all are and proud to know that our predecessors were made of better stuff!

I have to confess that I cannot bear seeing beaters turn up in track suit and trainers.

I have been on one shoot where all beaters had to wear shirt and ties!

It's never been acceptable to wear those - good old days or modern day..... just saying

I don't think for one second that they'd be happy.

They would definately question why so many gave their lives........Sad really, really sad.
