After a brown trouser moment with a malfunctioning moderator earlier in the day I decided to jump back on the horse and have a look round with the lamp later that evening. Fields were soaking and churned to feck by the cattle removed some weeks earlier but in the chicken field decided to try a call. Just about to back it in when some eyes appeared and charged up the hill towards me. I stopped it with a bark put the dot on its chest and 'CLICK!' - what a donut, forgot to chamber a round

 

Charlie didn't like that one bit and skitted towards the hedge, I squeeked as loud as I could to muffle the sound of me working the bolt and fortunately it stopped by the hens netting. Have it!

 

 

After a while trudging throughb the saturated fields I decided to pack it in and went to dispose of the fox in the designated area. Blow me some eyes at the far hedgerow, I tried the call but the eyes vanished. This must be the crafty bugger thats been causing all the trouble that everyones been after for a while. No way was I going prone in the soaking mud so I put the rifle on the standing sticks and barked loudly and the eyes appeared a fair way off. Max zoom, steady up and boom. The time between the shot and the thump told me it was a fair shot and it paced out at 217 meters.

Factory stuff mate - Norma 40 grain Ballistic Tips. Its a case of get what you can when you can down here. Haven't tried the 50/55 grain ones but i've shot these with a decent wind blowing and not noticed any significant drift, not enough to miss a fox anyway. They do terrible damage if they hit a bit of bone.
