Aggressive saluki

some nice looking fit dogs on here, , regards the aggression in the the saluki +saluik xs, i remember years back at a show, when i used show my bullmastiffs. The 1 day some people were walking some salukis from the car park, as were loads of other dogs coming from there. The was abloke i knew with big brindle bullmastiff ,that was fiery fecker with people+dogs, he was like the old time bullmastiff. Anyway they must got bit ot close to each other, and this big male saluki grabbed the bullmastiff, bloody hell it kicked off then.the bullmastiff locked on to it, we got it sorted but feckin hell could have done with out.i seen the bloke about month later, his dog was ok, but didnt pile in to dogs like as before, still aggressive but not as bad as before, but he did say as on her the saluki breed can be twats with other dogs and were not bad guards .

My old saluki dog is very dominant and won't back down from any dog. He hates staffs and bull Xs too. Very gentle to people but a killer if another dog challenges him. My younger saluki x is the opposite but he has less saluki in him.

Is that a pure saluki daz? Very unusual markings, well, to me anyway, not seen one marked like that, very nice dog

No he's 3/4 saluki 1/4 whippet, he's actually tri coulour there's a good few of the gingery tan spots on him especially round his muzzle, a boy asked me other day if he was saluki x dalmation

I have a male saluki x borzoi, anyone know if it is an aggressive cross breed normally? I have problems with small dogs and some larger retreiver type dogs. He is ok with my female collie but they grew up together. He is 18 months old now and I have had him since 5 months. He has been done but has not made any difference and it started about 4 months ago before we had him done. He is fine with people and a couple of dogs he knew from before the aggression started. A pack of terriers chased him 3 times before this started and I think its since then that hes been shouting at dogs even ones that go past the front of the house when the front door is shut! This is annoying when he kicks off at 4am sometimes! He is very loyal with me most of the time and affectionate but has even growled at me at night sometimes if I go downstairs past his cage. He is about 27kgs at the moment. I muzzle him when he is off the lead for his run. He can launch at dogs unexpectedly when on the lead especially at night and has charged after some dogs on other occasions with muzzle on and lead off and it is frightening for the other owners and me. I do not mind that he is a good guard dog but I dont want to be guarded against other dogs, just anyone near my back garden at night. He is good at this, but I dont really want the other stuff if possible!!

Following a staffy attack on our saluki about 18 months ago, our saluki has become very aggressive towards other dogs, especially when he is on the lead. Think this stems from the fact he was on the lead when he was attacked. We have tried training classes to resocialise him and it worked with the dogs there, once he got to know the dogs he was fine. He is still as bad with unknown dogs. Any tips? He was just over 12 months when it happened.

this is a typical example of emotion in equalling emotion out , the attack was emotion going into his system the aggression with other dogs is it working itself back out again,

a dog on a lead can give a false reading of aggression, a dog can feels trapped and vulnerable and feels it has to attack before been attacked itself,

getting it to play with as many different dogs as possible helps, getting the dog to bark on command helps too,

 

a dog barking releases tension without having to act on it, as when it encounters another dog it gets a tension build up which causes the explosion of aggression in the dog, the bark is pure energy and the mutt feels better after and if another dog is present it to is given credit for causing the good feeling in your dog,

 

also dont get yourself into a sweat when encountering another mutt it dont help at all,

 

just read this bit again, and your right regards the barking thing . my younger dog Buck had a staff x boxer roughing him up last week , not fighting but you could see staffx was very dominate in all his ways, my young dog just sat down and barked at him , as my dog not aggressive to people or dogs , he got soft nature .But my other dog Bryn different, he wont take the fight to another dog, but he deff wont take any shit , like my young dog does . the staffx tried it on Bryn and nearly kicked off , we had to grab both dogs quick me and the other owner . I told her she was very lucky that my young dog big soft thing, because if he had the temp of my collie x , her staffx, would have been in trouble if he had stated to fight back at it,as he very powerful dog with strong jaw that could do a lot of damage quick

Its why i love the saluki so much there almost ferral aproach not been over domesticated. Still are very true to type and breed. Tho give it another 30years and the kennel club will changed em. Just glad there are many working men who strive to keep them true to the breed.

As alot people said very slow aproach amd hope that attack hasnt changed her long term but has to be said salukis have exceptional memory so be hard long road

Some are aggressive I dont mind it but find when they get hold they go straight for the throat and a trying to kill it were as the one that arent aggressive just give a few tears when they fight my bitch got a bit of a raggin when it was a pup its ok round dogs but if they are aggressive it'll kill them if you arent quick best thing I find if a dog comes trying to attack is to take your dog of the lead two bull terriers come to me I let dog off lead they had a little tyssle me dog took off with them chasing once it got them tired one started nashing off the other tryed following but me dog wouldnt let it off the field give it some right hammer I got him off poor dog was a right state then the owner appear as if by magic must a been sat watching thinking it would be a giigle and my dog isnt aggressive I let it off thinkng itll be to quick for them

funny you should say that about going for the throat my male saluki is just like that , and if you pull them off and the other dog is still in the field the bugger will go back for another go ,they aint the fluffy eared softies folk think they are .

I thought borzois were supposed to be bad round small dogs anyway?

Well said. Thats salukis, i like them a lot myself for that reason. I dont treat them as out and out hare dogs ect, just like to use them as lurchers, this seems to work better.
