ok this the first of a pair of large cutting knives , its based on the greek kopis , the famed blade of alexander the greats army , and believed to be the forerunner for the also famed napalese kukri \ gurkha knife.

constructed from 4mm thick o1 tool steel with a differential temper , meaning the cutting edge is hard to retain the cutting edge, and the spine - ricaso and tang all spring tempered for flexability.

the blade its self is 27 cm or 10 3\4" long 5cm or 2" at the widest point . it has a convex grind for strength when chopping , this is a superior grind for chopping tools in my mind as the cross section is stronger than a flat grind. blade is satin finnished .

the handle is a very nice piece of cocobolo wood with multipal brass pins and single lanyard tube.

the sheath is made from 3 thicneses of leather , hand brushed dye effect that ranges from light tan to dark brown at the edges and very dark brown on the back, it has a bras rectangle hoop and a belt hanger for better movement when walking etc .

asking price is £185 which covers paypal fees and firstclass recorded delivery .

ok pictures .

Next to the kukri its light and fast with great balance . I never wanted to make the kukri because I thought it would be so hard to make , I dunno if it's because iv made a good few larger knives lately but it wasn't as bad as I expected to make . It's true the kukri is a blade heavy knife but after a lot of reading and research it's meant to be ..

I think because I shoot pigeons a lot and live in the countryside I use a machete axe etc all the time so I would use this sort of thing Weekly .

But I can imagine lots wouldn't .

I had a very good mate over this weekend , known him all my life . We where looking at the knives as you do . And when I showed him my 3 personal knives he laughed at me .

I have a very cheap machete that I customised the blade on , a fieldcrafter that was a second (Iv never looking after it ) and a weird little neck knife I made years ago that's also been badly abused they have all worked very hard been badly reground and are stained or rusty ( just the machete is rusty ).

I really should have a machete like this , and it's high time I had a few others of my own making !!

So I have a new design built for my needs that I will be marketing very soon , funny the one design has branched off to become maybe 4 separate knives .. Iv spent a lot of time on the design over the last 3 months and I think I'm close to something very different , and very usable ..

But as we have all herd me say many times I can't afford the materials to Finnish them ...

This Christmas was the worst in the 5 years Iv been making . Iv never offered so much variety at such low prices . My fear was I wouldn't sell enough to survive Xmas/new year so I kept the prices low and the volume up to Taylor for empty pockets like mine . And my fear came to reality , things have to change so I am phasing out the budget stuff very soon .

Some of you know Iv lost a lot while making knives, house , relationship , income blar blar .

I don't regret any of it but I think I have earned the right to live well off this practiced skill ??

There's around 1,000 of my blades out there from the last 5 years , so I can't be accused of not giving everyone a chance to use / own one ha ha

When I look at other makers in the professional side of the industry they are light years ahead of me .

So as a slowly build up new tools , skills and work space I want to bring the budget stuff to a close .

If it doesn't work out trying for more international based sales with Prestige knives I can always return to the budget hunting market.

But I'm still a long way off that goal so there will be knives week in week out .

Iv tried so many things to make it pay , this is the final one for me .

I and those that are makers or live round a knife making workshop don't think anyone realises how hard it is to do , how messy and expensive , noisy and dangerous . In that statement I don't me retired makers or hobby guys making 3 a month I mean proper time served craftsmanship workshop with big tools and 200 processes all happening at once .

I can't think of many trades that don't return a living on that sort of thing . Iv had a few jobs in my life , this one I love the most but in reality a cleaning lady has a higher earning potential than me , sad state of affairs but true ..

I'm not bitching just getting it said and doing something about it .

But not being able to afford a gift for your sons 12th birthday is a thing of the past . The poor sod got to choose one of the unsold knives and ordered a throwing knife he will also probably never use ..

Unfortunately he doesn't use or like knives like us lot ..

Anyway that's where I'm at and where I'm heading . If non of it works out I'm off to be a cleaning lady !!!!

This is one my son has had on the go for a while. The wrought iron is a piece i pulled out of a skip, just thought it was mild steel rod, only realized when it was being forged into a pair of tongs. The tongs got abandoned and the wrought iron put to a better use. The blade is leaf spring from a series 2 landy.

Recently finished this knife. I made it for a "knife in the hat" draw over on EM forum.
The style is Kiridashi so ground on one side only with the other flat like a chisel. Ideal for cutting leather or anything else where you would run the blade along a straight edge.

This blade is made from motorbike chain hand forged on to a leaf spring core. I have experimented a few times with chain Damascus but this is the cleanest weld yet, not perfect but it has character. Very hard to eliminate all the voids in the chain beating it by hand...even though i spent probably half a day hammering away on it.... I will make a press one day.
I had a smaller knife in mind when i started out but wanted to maximize the lump of rough forged "Damascus" I ended up with so it determined the size & shape of the final blank.
The blade is 7.5 inches and handle  approx 4.5 so overall something like a 12" Knife.
Handle is Scottish red stag and the bolster/ pommel are stacked brass & copper soldered together.

Heard a while back mention of sharpening with MDF wheels but never really paid much attention. I recently thought i would give it a go and turned up a quick MDF wheel on the face-plate of my wood-working lathe. I clamped a makeshift guide to the back of the lathe and worked with the wheel turning away from me. I was blown away by the results! Super sharp paper slicey edge straight off the wheel.

Decided a dedicated MDF wheel sharpener was high on the list of must haves so started gathering bits. I was lucky enough to pick up an old 8" Makita bench grinder on ebay for £25. Everything else is made from scrap bits so that was all the outlay for the build.

I took the guards off the grinder, swapped the switch and the power cable around so the on/off switch is effectively now on the back so the grinder can be operated with the wheels running away from you.

The knife clamp is made from an old door hinge welded to a bit of rod off of some other power tool, hence the nice grippy knob on the end. A 6mm hex bolt through the hinge clamps the knife in place. A cutting of hex bar slides up and down to alter the angle of grind and locks in place with another allan bolt.

Once set up to the desired angle the blade can be sharpened on both sides and both wheels quickly without altering anything.

The MDF wheels are loaded with grey polishing compound and jewelers rouge respectively.
