boar knife not a true "how to" but just a little write up following the construction of a knife from a file to a "boar knife" i had a similar knife planned but after a pm from a hunting life member

me to aidy , every time i start a photo group following the work it goes wrong .....

i worked on the shoe the other day but there was just so little stable iron left to hammer , it collapsed over and over again until i had a piece about the size of a bean tin lid and it wasnt stable !!

so scrapped it ..

i have a metal detecting lady keeping any she finds for me so i will have more volume of iron as a starting place . i think thats a better way to go or use some equily old but not so small piece of iron ..

now i have rented a worshop inside a bigger traditional forge i have access to loads more tools and materials , just have to barter with the blacksmith ....

justy a reminder now that im in place i can offer courses fo any of you to learn how to make knives . from basid beginners through to making damascus . on a one to one basis or group .

i willallways try to make sure you leave with a finnished knife but you need to think this will probably be over 3 days .. so feel free to pm if your interested .

all the best , matt

4 damascus knives iv made from scratch and a blank , everything is done by me including making the steel !!! please dont expect the cheap prices of the indian damascus sold on the internet , this is made from the correct metals and heat treated and tempered properly , not made from baked bean tins and car bumpers like the indian shite :)

the prices are stupidly cheap but i have to keep cash flowing !!!!

the steels used are 15n20 high carbon nickel steel , try finding this stuff , and if you do you wont like the price , very little is made and pretty much all of it goes to blade smiths .

W2 steel which is what files are made of , very hard steel that makes an outstanding cutting edge.

O1 tool steel again a superb steel with high carbon, also a superb blade material.

and some mild steel in the blank , which has no carbon to speak of but makes and interesting contrast in the pattern and offers some toughness to the blade.

ok first up is a small pocket/neck knife , theres enough room on the sheath for a couple of small holes for the lace if you want it and i can send some of the same para cord with the knife if you need .

blade length of "2 ,120 layers of 15n20 and o1 tool steel in a randome pattern make the blade , red stag tine and ebony cap. tooled english 3.5mm calf sheath, wet formed round the knife with brass lanyard tune , i get endless requests for small gutting knives and i hope this will appeal to someone looking for a really nice one ?

£60 which cover first class postage uk only .

second is another stag tine knife with ebony caps , same steel same materials , this one has a rounded spine with a 4" flat ground blade and a little over 4" handle , again tooled leather sheath with belt loop . great knife i really lioke it and this style allways seems popular , i think it has an old world look to it , nice and simple ready to do work, its got a great temper and will stay sharp if you look after it .

£120 which also covers first class recorded delivery to the uk .

next is a knife finnished with marlee burr handle ebony cap brass lanyard tube with an interesting blade . forget with 15n20 w2 and o1 , this blade is just a straight laminate i forged it for super hard edge , theres alot of sexy carbon in there and has a deferential temper meaning great effort has gone in to make sure its soft and springy in the spine / tang/and ricasso areas but hard as hell on the cutting edge . tooled leather again with pop stud fastner . great working knife that not to flash to see some hard work and strong enough to be great at the worst cutting jobs you can think of .blade length 4 3/4" long nice slender profiled knife .

£120 which covers uk firstclass recorded delivery .

next is my favorite knife to date , it was the skinner i had for sale the other week , its been re-worked and looks and feels great , got a clip pointed blade flat grind , steel bolster and marlee burr handle , new tooled leather sheath , and i think 200 layer 15n20 and o1 blade .

honestly it feels great , if i was flush i would keep it myself ha ha .

just over the 4" mark on blade length ..

£200 on this bad boy , cover postage to ..

i love that knife

next is an experimental patterened blade i made up , the center of the blade is tool steel , 15n20 and mild steel , i made it as a demonstaration piece for a student that came to learn about making damascus with me at the forge, then the spine and cutting edge are made of W2 and 15n20 as a pattern i was trying to creat as my own , it sort of worked but not as i had palnned , i think i will carry on working with the patter at a later stage ..

this one is 3 1/2" in length and would suit a nice handle i think and easy enough for a beginer to finnish , as all the others its properly heat treated and tempered ready to use . £30 posted for this one .

i hope you like them !!

any question ask on here or pm , i also now offer group or one to one tuition in the forge makeing knives , steel what have you.

you get to learn how its done , power hammer some steel and walk away with what you made , so please ask if your interested.

all the best , matt

This is one my son has had on the go for a while. The wrought iron is a piece i pulled out of a skip, just thought it was mild steel rod, only realized when it was being forged into a pair of tongs. The tongs got abandoned and the wrought iron put to a better use. The blade is leaf spring from a series 2 landy.

Recently finished this knife. I made it for a "knife in the hat" draw over on EM forum.
The style is Kiridashi so ground on one side only with the other flat like a chisel. Ideal for cutting leather or anything else where you would run the blade along a straight edge.

This blade is made from motorbike chain hand forged on to a leaf spring core. I have experimented a few times with chain Damascus but this is the cleanest weld yet, not perfect but it has character. Very hard to eliminate all the voids in the chain beating it by hand...even though i spent probably half a day hammering away on it.... I will make a press one day.
I had a smaller knife in mind when i started out but wanted to maximize the lump of rough forged "Damascus" I ended up with so it determined the size & shape of the final blank.
The blade is 7.5 inches and handle  approx 4.5 so overall something like a 12" Knife.
Handle is Scottish red stag and the bolster/ pommel are stacked brass & copper soldered together.

Heard a while back mention of sharpening with MDF wheels but never really paid much attention. I recently thought i would give it a go and turned up a quick MDF wheel on the face-plate of my wood-working lathe. I clamped a makeshift guide to the back of the lathe and worked with the wheel turning away from me. I was blown away by the results! Super sharp paper slicey edge straight off the wheel.

Decided a dedicated MDF wheel sharpener was high on the list of must haves so started gathering bits. I was lucky enough to pick up an old 8" Makita bench grinder on ebay for £25. Everything else is made from scrap bits so that was all the outlay for the build.

I took the guards off the grinder, swapped the switch and the power cable around so the on/off switch is effectively now on the back so the grinder can be operated with the wheels running away from you.

The knife clamp is made from an old door hinge welded to a bit of rod off of some other power tool, hence the nice grippy knob on the end. A 6mm hex bolt through the hinge clamps the knife in place. A cutting of hex bar slides up and down to alter the angle of grind and locks in place with another allan bolt.

Once set up to the desired angle the blade can be sharpened on both sides and both wheels quickly without altering anything.

The MDF wheels are loaded with grey polishing compound and jewelers rouge respectively.
