the gun has recently stopped cycling cartridges, tried a few different kinds so not a problem with the shells, stripped down and cleaned it, oiled it and still not cycling any ideas?

if you fill it full of shells and shoot one it wont cycle another cartridge into the chamber

Hi Rhoderick,

 

I too had this ssue wth my escort, I took it back to the shop I bought it from and asked them to take it back, instead I got a lesson in how to clean it!!

 

The last thing you want to do is oil it, all the muck from the burnt and unburn powder in the gases which cycle the action stick to it and this is what bungs up the action.

 

The tip I was given was to use nitro powder solvent or rifle cleaning foam, I use both Parker Hales 009 and Hoppes rifle cleaning foam. They both leave the action very clean and the leave behind a dry finnish which also leaves a lightly lubricated surface.

 

Since changing cleaning routine I have no cycling problems

Aslo make sure the gas vent in the barrel is free of fowling as you need the gas flow to be good to cycle the action !

Does it just lock back the block and leave the next cartridge in the magazine? If so, check that the spring on the magazine cut-off is fitted and not damaged. It often gets bent/broken, and the cut-off flaps around in the breeze. It almost inevitably ends up closed, stopping the next cartridge from feeding.

 

If not that, then look at the cleaning regime as stated above.

Remove all oil. Run it dry.

Make sure there is no gum in the action bar grooves in the receiver. 

Check the o ring is present and still good.

Make sure the trigger group is all freely moving and not gummed up.

Run it dry. Don't oil it.

Oh poop, I just noticed how old the original post is

OK, well check your trigger group is not gummed up with oil full of combustion deposits.

The rearward travel of the bolt releases the magazine stop but the shell lifter should also be down.

When you manually press the shell lifter up to the bolt it should drop back down again. If it doesn't you need to find out why.

Back then the Hatsan Escort was a disaster zone and frankly dangerous, my lads blew up, bulged the barrel and sent the end of it and bits of choke into the next county. 

It was all down to rubbish manufacturing and quality control (the whole design was somewhat lacking as well).  There was a raft of disaster posts about the gun!

I have not heard much about them over the last few years so I suspect they have improved designs/guns!

I think Turkish guns in general have come on leaps and bounds since mk1 escorts

You are probably right, but even back then some of the Turkish guns were ok, it did seem to be mainly the Hatsan Escort that was causing loads of problems.

There was the cycling issue as well of course, they were very fussy!
