Jill feeding kits + fostered kits

Hello all,

Well its been a bit of a distasterous week.

On Monday had to have one of my nursing Jills PTS after losing 9 kits in total. . Managed to foster 3 into my other litter of kits that are 10 days older and a lot bigger and stronger etc etc. . .The jill had lost weight quite rapidly over the weekend and was looking unsteady on her feet and not her usual alert self. . she had rejected a couple of kits and i was keeeping and eye on her but she was eating/drinking ok but just looked a bit tired as expected with the kits..anyway monday morning she had burried a few kits and left the rest all night out in the cold..She was laid flat on her belly and looking like shed had enough..So I went straight to vets thinking it was mastitis or nursing sickness and a few antibiotics would sort her..Unfortunately not.. Vet suspected tumurs or blockage of intestines..but would not reccomend opperating.. Sad goodbye to my little worker and friend of many many good days ferreting. .. Left the vets more upset than I've Left funerals,my missis says she cant believe how I can be more bothered about a ferret that died than a person that's died.

God help me when its the dogs time. . . i,ll be suicidle Sid from the Viz mags.. ffsake.

SO on a better note the 3 remaining kits are still here 1 hob and 2 jills..they are tiny micros compared to the 10 days older ones..and they have just opened their eyes this weekend..how they have survived is a miracle with the 9 big strong other kits..but the jill immediately cleaned em up and seems to be doing a good job of looking after them all.

I have also been giving them lots of lactose free milk ,eggs, chicken/carcas minced..rabbits,woodies etc etc...just to try and keep the kits from being hungry and give the Jill plenty of help.

The Jill likes to get out of the hutch when I check on them...so I let her have a run around for a while.. and usually clean the cage out and remove any of last night bones etc etc..She has now found a new way of doing both and getting in a bit of excercise in the process.

1st she gorges as much as she can get in herself ,then she stashes some close by,then she starts relaying to the kits..

I had to video it on my phone because it amused me and cheered me up to see her doing such a good job.

nice vid vin! if you dont mind me asking, where did you get the biscuit feeder one the cage witht the kits in?

cheers fella...The feeder is from Hopewells feeds on the helaby industrial estate ,Roth, south yorks.but not worth a £10...I got a plastic wild bird feeder from poundland that does the job just as good..i just had to make the hole that lets the feed out a bit larger with a pair of snippers. they come in handy and it stop the mess of the young ones throwing it everywhere like they do if its in a bowl/dish.
