Tinnitus and ear protection

Hi All, been a dead keen shooter for many years, I have recently developed tinnitus probably from shooting. I would be really devastated if I had to stop my sport, just wondering if anyone out there has got the T and is carrying on shooting with proper protection. Looking and the Cens digital?

im only 15 and have got it, ive started wearing ear plugs, its amazing how good a decent pair can be

Not got that bad but they have suffered damage over the years, I'm a right handed gun and eventually had to visit the doctor as our lass was sick of me saying I couldn't hear nowt,and no it wasn't selective hearing ha ha, he said my left ear is alot worse that's not that uncommon for a righ handed shooter,it's a bit worrying at 34, I guess we only have our self to blame,it's took me 17 years to decide to start wearing ear protection and it may be too late to be fair, I know it's annoying when out pigeon shooting etc but a 100 or so shots from the shotty can't bedoing them much good.

Use a .308 and a .222 and never wore ear protection, more fool me, got Tinitus in left ear (right handed shooter) and it whizzes accross to right ear, I also work in a noisy environment but have good hearin protectors supplied. Wish I had worn plugs when i was younger shooting, Tinnitus doesn't get netter or go away, once had always with you i'm afraid. Its a shitter.

I never shoot without at least my left ear plugged even with a cheap earplug. If I'm shooting a fair bit in a session, right ear gets a bud in it too.

My rifles are moderated so not a prob anyway, but tinnitus is a friend for life that I don't want!

The only way to truly protect your ears is with full coverage ear defenders, as only this type of protection will stop the sound wave from travelling through the bone at the back of your ear and still damaging your hearing. Any kind of 'in - the - ear' protection will stop direct sound and pressure wave from entering your ear via the ear canal, it will never stop the sound wave from passing through bone and then in to your ear. Good quality full coverage ear defenders are the only way to safe guard your hearing.

I had often wondered, Markha, if those pliable ear plugs were as effective in protecting hearing as the full-coverage head-phones you described above, and from what you say, the answer would be no. Till I read your post, I never knew that skull-bone conduction of sound could simply bypass ear-plugs, or that the head-phones do effectively block such sound transmission.

 

In addition to my occasional shooting, I drive a D7G Cat 'dozer with a worn-out muffler now and then, and with the words of caution here about how incurable ear damage can be, I'm going to invest in a pair of head-phone protectors to use with the ear buds.

.....yep, by the time I found this out it was a bit late for me, my left ear rings all the time, I have to sleep with the fan on next to the bed to provide some noise else it is so annoying trying to get to sleep with the ringing in my ears.

Thanks for your input guys, was feeling a bit down when I starting the post thinking my shooting days were over! but have spoken to an ear specialist and she says the Cens digital will do the job so I have ordered them. I will let you know my thoughts after trying them out. At least I know i'm not the only shooter who has got this problem. Any further advice appreciated. Thanks again.

I used to get a lot of ringing in the ears, especially at night when trying to sleep. An old boy told me to cut back on salt, i used to eat shit loads of the stuff. Have to say, for me, it made a big difference. Worth a try......if you eat a lot of salt that is.
