Waz 4,293
Am thinking of this for a barn ive started along with wood burners. All the people ive spoken to that are already using air pumps, reckon it is the same approx cost as heating oil. But I think with good insulation etc and wood burners ill only be using in the depths of winter......maybe?
SNAP SHOT 194
the air to air pump is less efficent than the geo thermal... but not alot in it, seems also that the air to air or air to water pumps tend to ice up alot, and the de icer has to kick in creating alot of excess cost to this system... legionares disease is also another worry with this system, but i was hoping to hear from anyone with either installed, spent a while getting this far, may as well do it right...lol
weasle 1,119
insulate the house as best you can afford, and no mater what you use it will cost very little.
trenchfoot 4,243
brother in law has looked into this extensively for his house rebuild. He has gone for ground source heat pump, backed up with solar panals. I also looked into air to air heat pumps for a swimming pool, but feedback was that it wasn't all its cracked upto be
SNAP SHOT 194
insulation is gonna be alot mate, 150mm cavity pumped, with 50mm dry lining high density, with roof joints also done, and 150mm sub floor insulation, i think i'm leaning towards the geo thermal, after reading alot about the air to air and air to water systems.... its gonna be done right, might take a while but i'm not rushing to finish it just for the sake of having it finished... i've designed it myself, and am doing a good bit of the work myself, so hopefully save a few quid along the way... cheers guys. sean1 13
I was on a Worcester training course, and the air to air seemed impressive, the temperature was cold outside but giving out warm in! They reckon for every 1 kw of electricity used 5 kw of heat was generated making it 500% efficient!! Edited to say, not too good on the eye tho. SNAP SHOT 194
cheers mate, not to good on the eye meaning an ugly unit beside the house....??? i'm leaning towards the geo thermal to be honest...

trappa 518
Im getting solar panels in next few weeks due to the FIT tarriffs being an utter win/win for the consumer. Anyway, the bloke who quoted me was saying that something else is going to get a government style grant next year just like the solar panels now, but i cant remember what it was, it could well have been one of them as he was wittering on about these 2 things but i wasnt really listening. Might be wise to find out what it is as it might save you a bob or two.
robbo 879
im just doing the electrics on a ground source heating system which is going to run under floor heating ,plus hot water. this has to have an 11kw feed for a heater that kicks in as and when necessary. Depending on your needs this could still be expensive to runThe air sorce heating also has a heater incorporated into it as the system has a limited temperature lift and if the unit cant manage the lift you need the heater will pick up the slack. Whichever one you go for look into it in fine detail for your needs EDITED TO SAY beware of the shallow ground source heating system as this can cause a permafrost in your soil and kill your lawn/plants Edited October 2, 2011 by robbo

Yes mate, like an air-conditioning unit on the outside of you house! Does it matter what direction the unit is facing? would it work better on the south elevation?
