Its time my old dog went that long one way walk and he is starting to suffer. The only thing is he hates the vet and i really don't want to take him there and put him on a table to die in the cold clinical room while others out side get there soft pot lickers there first jags seems the wrong way to do things to me. So is it legal for me to take him a walk to his favourite hill and just put him to sleep there my self.

If death is instant there should be no problem, but one thing to consider is that if you are shooting your own dog, you need to be very clinical and calm about it......could you be that detached, sure

A couple of years ago I had to put my old spaniel down, he had started to go blind and his back legs were clearly giving up on him. I decided that I would put him down on the basis he had lived by the

I agree, dig your hole first. Crumble up a chocolate digestive on the side of the hole you want to be and walk the dog up to the treat, let it drop its head to have sniff and do the honours with a .22

I'm almost sure you can ..this subject has done been done before..I think the best duty of care to your animals means you can pretty much do whatever you want to your own animals providing they don't suffer. The analogy is if you shot your dog and it died instantly that's ok but if you shot it with an air rifle that would be cruelty

Are you sure jt?. I didnt think it was legal. Be interested to see the legalities of this. On the other hand Wireviz i'm sure you will do fit legal or not.....sorry about your dog....

The law here did change in its wording about best care for your animals to tidy up some very grey areas in animal welfare and the reading is as i remember that you must provide best care for your animals..now that does create more grey areas i know ..I mean what would you rather see if it was your animal ..a serious stressed out dog at the vets who's having his fourth attempt at getting the needle in or a happy animal sat on a hillside one moment and gone the next ..i know what it would be for me if i had the choice ..tough decisions for any man

Agree with you 100% mate on that bud. I can tell you know that no way i'd be able to pull the trigger but still the best way to go i think.

It is legal. There was a court case a while back where some c**t of a meat head kicked his other half's yorkshire terrier to death. He was found not guilty of any offence because a: he bought her the dog, & b: it died instantly with one kick.

Dogs are classed as property of the owner, and it's not against the law to destroy your own property. It only becomes an offence if any suffering is caused in the process.

this may sound stupid and well its a case of why would you tell everyone your intensions .never the less . the law is a tricky job IF someone found out you shot your dog say with a rifle ,and it didnt say on your ticket ..for humane dispatch would the b...ds nick you , for not sticking to the conditions of your fac ,, i wouldnt shout it about if it was me ;)

That's a valid point, although I'd have thought that as a qualified stalker he'd have humane despatch on his ticket? :hmm:

If the legalities involved with the FAC are an issue use a shotgun.

Not really a nice thing to be talking about but it is a part of working dogs so I dont think talking about the subject in a respectfull way should be frowned on.

Personally I think you are making the right choice.

Just seems the right way to end it...

If death is instant there should be no problem, but one thing to consider is that if you are shooting your own dog, you need to be very clinical and calm about it......could you be that detached, sure of your aim, etc etc??? Would you feel OK seeing the dead dog with a big hole in its head? (exit wound from shotgun a bit radical at very close range). It can be a bit of a shock even if you are used to shooting game etc.

Vets will come to an owner's home and put a dog down: of course they charge extra for the call out. I've not yet had a vet unable to find a vein, but I would never let an inexperienced vet near my dogs in any situation, let alone when putting a dog down.

All that matters IMO is that the dog's last moments are peaceful and not filled with fear.

Theres a VERY sobering story in 'Work them hard, treat them like heroes' when Harcombe put down his border Robbie. Relavent to what you have just said.

I had to do the deed last year with my lakeland dog, very loyal and hard worker all his life so not the easiest of things to do.In my mind the dog is yours and he has served you well through the years so its up to you to return the favour,a bench in a vets is not the way.Bring him to wherever he spent most of his good years and let him have a wander about, then when he is finished and tired do the deed.Nobody needs to know do they, and you will feel better yourself in the long run, atb,fm.

After seeming to spend most of the weekend messing about I managed to get out this evening and extended an invite to a fella I work with who has a young dog he’s gundog training. He lives near a bit of ground I shoot and his 10 mth bitch was making good progress so I said bring her along if he wanted. It would make a nice change to have the security blanket of a dog to help you find those last light runners!
Anyway, we did a bit of walking - the dog saw something I didn’t but I didn’t realise til a roe was bounding away. After that the dog needed another mile to calm itself down!
Got to a nice observation point just before last light and had just got comfortable when an adult doe and Buck still in hard antler came bounding into the field. They relaxed and began to graze, obviously by themselves. The dog was unsighted when doe took the 6.5 square in the chest and dropped on the spot. We took the dog to where the deer entered the field and fair play to her she went straight to it... handy?.
Another plus point was my mate was there to drag it up the hill! Now that’s a result! She was a nice plump doe... made the fella sweat some!

Up to see in the dawn which promised to be a decent day . Got to a local perm in plenty of time to evaluate the wind and where to head for first . The very first field held what appeared to be a tiny button buck on its own and just what I needed for a chap I’m working for at the moment who’s been pestering for a beast . Easy stalk to within 70 yards , deer feeding slowly away unaware . On sticks and back of the head shot to which 8 more explode from the hedge including a buck still in hard antler . No point in dropping anymore today so watched them move on into next field . Just about to start gralloch when 3 more came trotting down the hedge towards me a doe and two followers . Few about here  it’s seems . Gralloched the youngster during which I decided to break the H bone , yes I know spelling lol He was a bit shitty around back end and to avoid the knife. Getting soiled that was the best practice I felt . Pushed down as I’ve done many times and the knife snaps , an outdoors swing blade which I favour over the rest tbh . Luckily I wasn’t cut but could have been . Will be contacting them ASAP I think . Saw several more deer including a munty which I would of had if it never rumbled  me at 150 yds . Cracking morning . Lovely sun rise and a deer . What else is there to life ??

2 Big Roe bucks shot with a Sako a7 in .308 using 150gr Hornady bullets. Swarovski Z4i & ELRange.
We are on the hunt this week for Roe Bucks. Good numbers of deer on this ground showing some huge heads. In this video we show a great trophy buck taken and a smaller 6 pointer as well.

The first buck is a cracking buck still in its youth and the second is only a couple years old but has thrown tremendous antlers for such a young animal.

We spotted a big trophy on the same ground earlier in the morning but have decided to leave that for someone else to pull the trigger!
